For the last time this season, here’s a BIG shout out on our final day together as an U12s URFC team…
We started the season nervously counting players, nervously counting coaches, checking calendars, and wondering if we would be able to play a competitive match this year but week by week, this group has grown into something pretty special!
We finish our season with a full squad of 19 incredible players and a full coaching lineup of four committed and skilled coaches —Tom, Ben, Andy leading the way and then Paul joining us in the second half of the season. Paul, of course, was only meant to run the line at Edenbridge… and we assume he didn’t hear the final whistle as he’s still here 🤣. Only joking Paul, we love you really!
Along the way, we’ve welcomed new players who’ve quickly become teammates, then friends, then an integral part of our team. Some new to rugby and some joining from other teams. And the results? Not bad at all! Wins over Pulborough, East Grinstead, Haywards Heath, Hastings, Bexhill, Brighton, Crowborough… a hard-fought draw at Edenbridge… and that small matter of a nine-game win streak! What a season!
We’ve taken this team beyond our own pitch too— proudly wearing our club ties on many occasions, representing the club at the Harlequins tournament and then hosting Harlequins for a training session. Safe to say, the boys rose to the occasions and showed true heart and resilience.
Off the pitch, we’ve had just as many highlights. A Christmas party that proved rugby players should probably stick to rugby rather than karaoke… and a brilliant day serving lunch to the Friday Gang and Club Directors —followed, of course, by a performance on the pitch where we beat Eastbourne; Polite hosts, ruthless players!
It’s impossible to write this without a huge thank you to the coaching team. The time, energy, patience, and passion they’ve given—week in, week out—has shaped not just the results, but the players and young people these boys are becoming. None of this happens without them. They are such good role-models to our players and they are appreciated.
And then there’s Heidi Greenwood. Where do you even start? Team manager doesn’t quite cover it. Organiser, problem-solver, match organiser, chief-whistle-finder, provider of lost kit, ref finder, calm voice of reason, second mum to the boys—and the heartbeat of this team. Heidi, we are unbelievably lucky to have you. Thank you for everything you do (including the things we don’t even realise you do).
Today we wrapped things up with awards:
Henry - Top Try scorer
Otis M - most improved
Alfie D- Player of the season
Eddie - Parents player
Alfie - Clubman
Ashton - players player We give huge congratulations to all of them, awards fully deserved.
Although, let’s be honest, picking winners in this group is nearly impossible. Every single one of these boys has thrown themselves into the season, put their bodies on the line, and played with heart. All are so integral to our team. That’s what this team so special.
A special mention—and a tough one—to Otis Burton, who’s decided to hang up his rugby boots and focus on football next season. We’re gutted to see him go because he’s been a huge part of this team, but we’re right behind him and wish him nothing but success. And remember, Otis… once a Wolf, always a Wolf. The door’s always open if you wish to return. We hope to see him and his mum Hayley on the sidelines cheering us on next season.
It’s been an absolute pleasure. A season full of growth, laughs, wins, muddy kits, questionable singing, and unforgettable moments. But for now, we close the chapter on U12s… and look ahead to U13s.
And in the words of our captain, Alfie…
“UCKFIELD ON ME… UCKFIELD ON 3! …1, 2, 3… UCKFIELD!”
