I hadn’t realised that it was today all those years ago in 1930 that the last remaining inhabitants of St Kilda left the island for good … For some reason it’s a place that has always fascinated me. Life there must have been very different in many ways from life here on the Isle of Mull, not least because of St Kilda’s far greater distance from the mainland. A few months ago, I attended an extremely interesting talk how about the island at our local Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust shop here in Tobermory, and I’m still curious to find out more.

Leaving St Kilda - On 29 August 1930 the remaining 36 inhabitants were taken aboard HMS Harebell for their journey to a new life on the mainland. The decision to leave was made after years of hardship, declining population, and increasing isolation, marking the end of permanent habitation on the islands.

‘We left our homes in sorrow, for although life on St Kilda was hard, it was the only life we knew.'

Frantic foalie frolics (halfway through this wee video) added fun to our Hebridean Farm Hike yesterday afternoon, with a lovely (and exceedingly well behaved!) family from across the big pond. As ever, Pickle the pet sheep was the real star of the show, though! 🐑💙🐴 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Coolcation, wetcation, windycation - most days, our Hebridean Farm Hikes can include at least one or all of these desirable 'modern' holiday components! :-)

The Scottish weather is no longer a joke as visitors head north from the rest of the UK to cool down.

And now for something completely different! PS: The bees seem ok, but Mr E. required significant doses of antihistamine after the mission … 🐝 🍯

For country folk, a day out at the local agricultural show is a highlight of the year. Yesterday’s Salen Show on the Isle of Mull was no exception! Huge thanks to everyone involved in putting on this wonderful local rural event. Here’s just a flavour of what went on …

Old habits die hard! Many moons ago, I worked for several years in the Scottish seed potato industry, and although Mull isn’t renowned for its arable crops (or at least not these days!), I still derive huge pleasure from harvesting my wee potato crop. It reminds me of an old potato farmer whose field I was inspecting back in the late 1980s. He pulled up a potato shaw (haulm) then knelt down in the dreel and dug his gnarled hands into the soil and lifted out several perfect potatoes, cupping them reverently in his hands. He looked down at them in awe and said, “Now look at that treasure.” The look of pure love and excitement on his face has stayed with me to this day … 🥔 🥔 🥔

Not the best of days for gathering in sheep … The hillside was pretty slippy, but fortunately heather makes good hand grips when trying to clamber upwards!
