Dempsey Taekwon-Do Club is proud to announce the promotion of Mr Matthew Willis and Mr Ben Willis to I Degree Black Belt.

Matthew and Ben were among the very first students to join Dempsey TKD when the club was established in 2022. Since then, both have demonstrated exceptional commitment, resilience, ambition, and a genuine desire to improve, making this achievement both well-earned and richly deserved.

Throughout their Taekwon-Do journeys, they have embraced every opportunity for growth and development. Both have participated in seminars and workshops, attended regional training sessions, competed at domestic and international levels, and committed themselves to the club’s Leadership Programme. They have consistently represented the club with distinction and have become valued role models for younger students.

Most recently, Matthew and Ben played an important role in supporting regional interclub events and Kup gradings, demonstrating the leadership, professionalism, respect, and integrity expected of students who live by the Tenets of Taekwon-Do and uphold the Student Oath. Their willingness to contribute beyond their own training reflects the character and maturity they have developed throughout their martial arts journey.

Achieving I Degree Black Belt is a significant milestone and represents years of hard work, perseverance, discipline, and personal growth. It is not only recognition of technical ability but also of the commitment, attitude, and values they have displayed throughout their training.

Both Matthew and Ben should take immense pride in what they have accomplished. Their promotions are a testament to the effort they have invested, the challenges they have overcome, and the standards they have consistently maintained. We are confident that they will continue to develop as martial artists, leaders, and ambassadors for the club, inspiring others through their example and contributing to the continued success and growth of Dempsey TKD.

Congratulations, Matthew and Ben, on this outstanding achievement. We look forward to supporting you both as you continue your Taekwon-Do journeys and reach even greater heights in the years ahead.

The club would also like to extend its sincere thanks to Grand Master Nicholls for the honour and privilege of delivering the promotion presentation and recognising this important milestone in Matthew and Ben’s Taekwon-Do journeys.

On Sunday 24th May, we proudly hosted our annual Generation X Day, one of the highlights of our yearly calendar. This all-inclusive training event gave our youngest students the opportunity to come together for a full day dedicated to patterns, sparring, special techniques, and breaking, all within a fun, supportive, and empowering environment.

We began the day with engaging games and pattern practice, helping students build confidence and precision in their grading patterns. By incorporating pad work, students were able to visualise clear targets and focus on developing fully rotated, effective punches with strong technique and control.

Following a short refreshment break with fruit and biscuits, training continued with focused kicking drills. With Side Kick featuring prominently in upcoming gradings, students worked on correct Korean terminology, kicking direction, and chamber position. To further challenge and develop their skills, hopping variations were introduced and every student rose to the occasion with fantastic determination and effort.

At lunchtime, students, helpers, and leadership enjoyed an alfresco break together outdoors. It was wonderful to see students laughing, socialising, and building friendships alongside their training.

The afternoon session moved into sparring activities, where bubbles were used as dynamic targets to encourage accuracy, control, and technique variation. The energy in the room was outstanding, with smiles, enthusiasm, and confidence shining through from every student.

The final training hour focused on flying kicks; always a fan favourite. Students launched through the air to strike the pad before landing safely on the crash mat showing courage, commitment, and growing confidence with every attempt. As the challenge increased with additional kick shields, students encouraged one another with applause and cheers. Special recognition goes to Calvin and Stevie, who achieved an incredible clearance of six kick shields high.

To conclude the day, students demonstrated their power and focus through board breaking using hammer fists and front punches, providing a truly emphatic finale to an unforgettable event.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to every student who attended and helped make the day such a positive and enjoyable experience. We are equally grateful to our Leadership Team for their outstanding support, encouragement, and professionalism throughout the event.

Today in Gedney, 27 of our Dempsey TKD Kup students came together for an outstanding day of training, development, and teamwork. The event provided students of all grades with the opportunity to strengthen their technical understanding, challenge themselves physically, and continue progressing together as a club.

The day began with our 3rd Kup and above students taking part in an intensive hour focused on Toi-Gye Tul. Training centred around drilling pattern-specific movements to develop greater precision, understanding, consistency, and confidence through repetition and detailed technical work.

At 10:30am, the remaining Kup grades joined the session as training shifted towards traditional blocking techniques. Students focused on stepping, correct chamber positions, direction, and practical application. The session then progressed into striking drills using knife-hand and back-fist techniques, with continued emphasis on correct chambering and utilising full body movement to maximise power and effectiveness. To conclude the morning session, students performed their respective patterns before finishing with endurance and conditioning exercises that tested both physical and mental resilience.

Lunch provided an opportunity for everyone to recharge and enjoy time together as a club. With the benefit of the glorious weather, many students enjoyed lunch outside, while Mr Dempsey Jr kindly provided ice lollies to help everyone cool down. The younger students enjoyed games and activities, while the adults took the opportunity to relax and socialise.

The afternoon session focused on kicking techniques. Following last year’s focus on front and back kick development, this year’s training concentrated on side kick and reverse turning kick. Students explored the technical differences between the side kick and side piercing kick, with detailed attention given to chambering, rotation, direction, body posture, and correct use of the kicking tool. Wall drills were used to help students strengthen their foundations before progressing onto pad work. Students were then divided into groups, with blue belts and above refining the correct piercing motions required within Joong-Gun Tul.

To conclude the day, students moved on to reverse turning kick training — an advanced technique, particularly challenging for our 10th and 9th Kup students. However, every student approached the challenge with determination and gave 100% effort throughout. By breaking the technique down into clear stages, students developed a stronger understanding of rotation, delivery, kicking lines, and how the technique can be effectively applied within sparring situations as a counter attack.

We would like to thank all of our fantastic students for embracing the opportunity to train, learn, and grow together as a club. Once again, the training day proved to be a tremendous success, showcasing the commitment, spirit, and positivity within Dempsey TKD. We are already looking forward to next year’s event.
