Report from Anglesey - CRMC/FRC Championships

The drive across on Friday was littered with traffic delays, it being a BH weekend, and it took me and Dave Gilbert 7 hours + to get to the circuit. Mind you, Dave did take us on the scenic route!

I had been offered space in a garage kindly donated by Rusty Lee which was great as I knew it might be a tad wet over the weekend, and I also had to fit the fairing to the bike before scrutineering. The fairing had been repaired and painted by Jono and kindly paid for by Mike Hose, for which I am most grateful.

So, practice. Much needed as I had not been to this circuit 7 or 8 years. Did not go well. In fact I never got out. The motor refused to cooperate and after two trips back to the garage to use the rollers I gave up.

Can’t say that I found anything other than the fact that I had 10’s in so after chatting with Dave Gilbert about plugs I changed them to 9’s.

Race 1 - I started at the back of the grid, and had to use the first couple of laps to reacquaint myself with the circuit, and in the process chase Dave Gilbert down. I managed to pass him and set about staying in front. Dave is chasing me in the 250 Elite Championship so I was expecting him to pass me on the back straight every lap. His Rotax has about 20bhp more than my TZ250 which has 54bhp. I never saw him again so I was pleased to finish first in class.

Turns out Dave had fuel starvation on one of the carbs due to a kinked fuel line.

Race 2 was bumped to Sunday morning, and this time I was ahead of Dave on the grid. I got an absolute flyer of a start and once again set off to stay ahead of Dave. Every lap I expected him to come by but it never happened. Had a battle with Lyndsay Pyall on his 350 and beat him to the line. So once again I finished first in class in a torrential downpour on the last lap.

Sadly Dave retired again, this time with a blowing exhaust which seriously damaged his attempt in getting on terms in the Championship.

The two remaining races were combined into one 12 lap race. And with the track drying in places I decided that as Dave was a non starter, there was no need for me to try any heroics, but to ride sensibly and collect the double points from the race for the overall FRC Championship.

So collecting 100 points from the weekend put me in an uncatchable position with a lead of 134 points in the 250 Elite Championship. A Championship win - which is a first for me :-)

Race Leathers
I’ve now had another race weekend since my crash at Brands Hatch in July where my ARN Race Leathers performed exactly as the should. No significant damage or holes in the leather and the air vest worked seamlessly. The suit was so good I was able to walk away with only minor bruising. The suit feels like a second skin now they are fully bedded in, and this shows that the attention to detail taken when I got measured is essential. The quality of the zips are brilliant too, very robust. The UKCA & CE Approval along with the AAA Rating is well justified and I endorse these leathers.
