Match Report – Rushden Fc sundays v AFC Hackleton (H)
A semi-final day at Spencer Park for the boys, and one that was fully deserved after three straight wins in the League 2 Plate group stage. A remarkable achievement considering this team had previously treated winning streaks like solar eclipses, very rare and not often witnessed. Safe to say, confidence in the camp was high heading into this one.
Having suffered a 5-1 defeat to AFC Hackleton earlier in the season, the Rushden boys were determined to show just how far they’ve come since those dark days when defending looked more like a social experiment than an organised back line.
Both teams started brightly, creating chances early and getting in behind each other’s defences. But the breakthrough came for the visitors after a mix-up at the back between Harley and Nathan. Nathans back pass went the wrong side of the keeper and kindly rolled through for their striker to tap home. One of those “heads in hands” moments that leaves everyone briefly staring into the distance questioning life choices. To make matters worse, Nathan is also a Nottingham Forest fan, so we’ll be keeping an eye on him this week as another setback might finally send him over the edge.
Thankfully, the boys responded brilliantly.
Rushden quickly stamped their authority on the game when Zak sprayed a lovely ball over to Jayden on the right wing. Looking up and seeing absolutely nobody arriving in the box, possibly because everyone was still recovering from the defensive mishap, Jayden decided he’d do it himself. He unleashed a low, thunderous effort that flew into the bottom corner. The crowd erupted, the bench lost its mind, and the defenders collectively exhaled in relief. Star boy behaviour.
Rushden then grabbed a second. Jayden was involved again, driving down the left this time before being very obviously fouled on the wing. Credit to the referee, who played an excellent advantage as the ball broke to Reo. He cut inside and fired goalwards, with a slight deflection helping it on its way into the net. Was it lucky? Maybe. Were we bothered? Absolutely not.
At 2-1, Rushden were on top.
The second half remained tight and fiercely competitive, with both teams creating chances but finding goalkeepers and defenders in stubborn form. As the game entered the final 20 minutes, Hackleton threw more players forward searching for an equaliser.
Eventually, it came from a corner. Somehow, the smallest player on the pitch managed to beat Wilks to a header. To be fair, it was an excellent header and Harley had no chance. Slightly frustrating after defending so well for long spells, but once again the boys showed great character and kept battling.
Both sides had opportunities to win it, but the match finished 2-2, meaning penalties would decide the semi-final.
The shootout was as tense as expected, with both teams scoring 4 out of 5 before sudden death arrived. Unfortunately for Rushden, one missed penalty handed Hackleton the chance to win it and they made no mistake.
A hugely deflating way to go out, but overall it was a fantastic contest and a credit to both teams. The opposition were full of compliments afterwards, and every player on the pitch could walk away knowing they’d given absolutely everything in a fiercely competitive game. We wish AFC Hackleton all the best for the final!
For Rushden, it means the season comes to an end. Hard to take, of course, but the boys should be massively proud of how they finished the campaign. Going unbeaten in four games is something previously thought impossible, but here we are. There are real foundations to build on, and the team will no doubt come back stronger next season.
Finally, a message from the players as we now know Bob will be stepping down as Rushden Sundays manager due to personal reasons and having less time to commit.
Despite results not always reflecting the effort put in, Bob has built an unbelievable dressing room spirit, created a genuine sense of belonging, and helped form friendships that will last well beyond football. He leaves behind strong foundations for the team to push forward and hopefully achieve the success they deserve next season. He’ll be greatly missed around the club!
Rumour has it, however, that retirement won’t exactly be quiet. Sources suggest Bob plans to spend much of his free time attending Butlins 70s weekends, where his well documented appreciation for older women can finally become a full-time hobby. We wish him every success in this exciting new chapter.
