Match report
The local derby between Phoenix and Maltby, whilst not a tryfest had all the elements expected of the first competitive game between the two teams. Both teams showed huge commitment and the awful weather contributed to make the game a real arm wrestle. Phoenix failed to take advantage of the slope in the first half, mainly by giving away penalties at key times but at half time there was a reset on the tactics and the directness of that approach proved to be the difference. Maltby had their chances but fluffed their lines at the key moments. At three all with five minutes to go Phoenix took the initiative and the pressure of their driving finally took its toll on Maltby. Tom Coy, who had been a target of some rough stuff throughout the game exacted his revenge, driving over the line to score with the last play of the game. Maltby provided a superbly tough challenge and the players on both sides were exhausted by the end but Phoenix came away with the win. - Dave
