Interesting to see Jesse Enkamp producing this video. Being both an Aikido and Karate teacher I have followed his videos for some time. However Karate does not get asked to justify itself as a martial art. Aikido seems to! Great to be raising the profile of Aikido in a positive manor.

Here is a short video from a course recently Surrey Hills Aikido Club. Demonstrating options for a straight upper level punch. Not easy to catch the timing, would it work, under pressure, 'on street', better than doing nothing.

Most attackers would not have trained so body movement would be different than a martial artist.

This is all about distance and hopefully reading the attacker. The quicker the attack, the smaller the defence.

We also covered hook punches later and other scenarios.

Slow broken down explanation by Adrian Sensei of Side-of-the-head strike (横面打ち, yokomen'uchi) a diagonal knifehand strike to the side of the head or neck, with the Kotegaeshi (wrist reversal) - defence throw your partner by twisting their wrist outwards.

This technique takes time to embed into your muscle memory, (subconscious) but can be used for various scenarios or as a movement exercise.
