⚽ FULL TIME | UPPER HAUGH FC 8–2 THORNCLIFFE VETERANS

A strong performance from Haugh this evening as we ran out 8–2 winners against Thorncliffe Veterans.

Haugh started brightly and created a number of early chances. The highlight of the first half was undoubtedly Gav Wills’ stunning 40-yard volley, following a clearance from the Thorncliffe goalkeeper.

Sam Thompson caused constant problems down the flank, taking on their full-back time after time, while Lewis Severn helped himself to two well-taken goals.

We headed into half-time 4–0 up, a lead that certainly didn’t flatter us. We also had two tight goals ruled out for offside, an effort cleared off the line and another come back off the woodwork.

Haugh started the second half a little slower, with perhaps a bit of complacency creeping in, before finishing strongly and adding another four goals towards the latter stages of the game.

Credit to Thorncliffe, who kept going and scored two well-taken consolation goals.

The standard of the pitch made it difficult for either side to get the ball down and play, while our opponents were physical throughout and certainly didn’t make things easy for us.

Another good workout and plenty of positives. Haugh worked hard and are looking in good shape heading into the new season, which begins away to Yorkshire Main Veterans in the County Cup. ⚽🏆

At just 17 years old, Tom put in an excellent performance at left-back. Solid throughout, made great decisions on the ball and never stopped working for the team. 👏

FULL TIME | Upper Haugh 2–4 Monkwood FC
Another 90 minutes under the belt in pre-season, this time against local Championship side Monkwood FC.

Upper Haugh were down to the bare bones with a few lads missing and some late drop-outs, but we managed to scrap a team together and started the game brilliantly.

From the off, we played some great football and looked comfortable on the ball. Five minutes in, Monkwood’s centre midfielder was sin-binned for calling the referee a “sausage” 😂, which opened the game up for Haugh.

The first goal came after some lovely football. Callum Plumber picked the ball up around the half way point and played a fantastic 25 yard ball out wide. Liam Reeves then delivered a great cross, which Connor Sanderson calmly converted to make it 1–0.

Just five minutes later, Haugh doubled their lead. Liam Reeves picked up the ball and produced a fantastic strike that beat the keeper to make it 2–0.

Both teams continued to play some great football, but two minutes before half-time Monkwood got themselves back into the game after our defence switched off and allowed them to score.

We knew Monkwood would come out fast in the second half, but once again Haugh were probably the better side. We hit the bar, hit the post and were also denied what looked like a clear penalty.

However, with limited options on the bench, tired legs eventually started to show and Monkwood began to take control.

Two penalties were conceded, one of which was a little dubious 👀, before a late strike completed the comeback and gave Monkwood a 4–2 win.

A great game of football and another valuable 90 minutes in the legs for the lads. Plenty of positives to take from the performance, especially considering the lack of numbers available.

FULL TIME | Upper Haugh FC 8–1 Yorkshire Wanderers

Upper Haugh welcomed divisional rivals Yorkshire Wanderers for our fourth pre-season fixture, and it proved to be another positive evening as preparations continue for the new season.

We started the game brightly, moving the ball well, maintaining possession and working hard to win it back whenever we lost it. The lads were rewarded with a dominant first-half display and went into the break with a deserved 4-0 lead.

The second half began a little slower, and for the opening 15 minutes Yorkshire Wanderers grew into the game, pulling a goal back with a well-taken free kick. Credit to them for their response—they continued to work hard and never stopped competing.

We regained our rhythm as the half went on and finished strongly, scoring three goals in the final five minutes to complete an 8-1 victory.

A big thank you to Yorkshire Wanderers for the game. A great group of lads who worked hard throughout the full 90 minutes, and we wish them all the very best for the upcoming season.

🏆 Man of the Match – Charley Gibson

A superb all-round performance from Charley. Calm and composed in possession, he rarely gave the ball away, defended excellently down the left-hand side and capped off his display with a well-deserved goal. A Rolls-Royce performance.

Upper Haugh FC 2-1 Beighton Phoenix FC

Another excellent test for the lads on a humid evening at Pope Pius School, where the hard, bobbly surface made it difficult for either side to get the ball down and play.

The first half was a closely contested affair with very little between the two teams. Both sides defended well and chances were limited. Unfortunately, Beighton took the lead after a deflected effort struck the post and fell kindly for their forward to tap home.

Despite going into the break 1-0 down, there were plenty of positives to take from the opening 45 minutes.

We started the second half brightly and immediately looked after the ball much better, moving it with greater purpose and confidence.

The equaliser came courtesy of a superb long pass from Connor Sanderson, which was brilliantly controlled over his shoulder by Tommy Hyde before he calmly lifted the ball over the advancing goalkeeper.

Just a few minutes later, The Haugh completed the turnaround. A well-worked move down the right saw Gav Wills find Sam Thompson, whose dangerous cross deceived everyone in the box before nestling inside the far post to make it 2-1.

There were opportunities to extend the lead, but both teams continued to work tirelessly until the final whistle.

A huge thank you to Beighton Phoenix FC for another fantastic pre-season fixture. Playing against a side from Division Two provides exactly the type of challenge we need, and, as always, they were a top set of lads. It was great to see them back at the cricket club for a beer after the game. We wish you all the very best for the season ahead! 👏🍻

Ryan put in a superb performance in the centre of midfield, working tirelessly throughout the game on a hot evening. He constantly broke up play, kept possession ticking over with simple, intelligent passes and set the standard with his work rate from first whistle to last.

This weekend, our first-ever club captain, Craig Jackson, unfortunately suffered a serious knee injury whilst representing Upper Haugh Cricket Club.

Match Report | Upper Haugh FC 3-0 Sheffield Bankers

Upper Haugh FC continued their impressive pre-season preparations with a 3-0 victory over a strong Sheffield Bankers side on Tuesday evening.

The visitors are the reigning champions of the league that Haugh will be competing in this season, making it another excellent test for the newly formed squad.

Upper Haugh started brightly and took the lead through Sam Thompson, who showed great composure to slot home the opener. The advantage was then doubled when Connor Sanderson powered home a bullet header from an excellent Gav Wills corner.

The standout performance of the night came from 16-year-old midfielder Lewis Severn. Introduced at half-time, Lewis made an instant impact by getting himself on the scoresheet with a composed finish. He then came within inches of adding a spectacular second, first crashing a superb 25-yard strike against the crossbar before seeing what would have been a stunning volley from the edge of the box ruled out after the ball was judged to have gone out of play in the build-up.

It was another encouraging team performance, with plenty of positives to take into the weeks ahead as preparations for the new season continue.

A big thank you to Sheffield Bankers for the fixture, and we wish them all the very best for the season ahead.

Upper Haugh 3-8 Strength & Unity FC

Upper Haugh kicked off pre-season with our first friendly of the summer. With plenty of our cricket lads only just returning to football after a few months away, there were definitely some heavy legs on show!

We started brightly and raced into a 2-0 lead, missing a great chance to make it 3-0. However, the game lacked much rhythm from our side, and we struggled to get the ball down and play on a hard, bobbly pitch – something to be expected in July.

Our opponents grew into the game and deservedly pulled it back to 2-2 by half-time.
As you'd expect in a pre-season friendly, there were plenty of changes throughout the second half, which didn't help the flow of the game. We conceded five goals in the opening 30 minutes after the break, putting the result well beyond our reach.

We did manage to grab a late consolation, but overall it was a disappointing performance. Credit to Strength & Unity FC, who worked hard, showed great desire throughout, and fully deserved their victory.

The most important thing was getting valuable minutes into the legs, and we'll take the lessons from this one into our next fixture against Sheffield Bankers.
