Greener Peebles is a registered charity running community-based projects that create volunteering opportunities including work experience and training for our local community. As well as community food growing we run skill share sessions on a variety of themes, hobbies and interests, so people can learn new skills and share their knowledge with others. We host regular community meals to bring people together and contribute to community causes as part of a group. After skipping Tuesday's session due to the wind warning, we resumed today and it was certainly a cracking end to the week! The fabulous sunrise led into a lovely sunny garden session - we welcomed a new corporate volunteer from Scottish Borders Council; hoed; planted garlic; watered; cleared beds and planters for winter crops; continued levelling for the new planters; painted the new bed marker posts that Erskine and Brown Garden Services did a marvellous job of installing; had a look ahead to some maintenance activities; and stood back to admire the goldening willow tunnel and the reddening cooking apples. A whopping great THANK YOU to everyone who joined us today, and have a lovely weekend everyone! 😃🌞🍂🍎🍁

The Greener Peebles 2027 Calendar is available to order now!

Our 2027 Slim Month-to-View Hanging Calendar is available for just £15. Not only is it a practical and attractive addition to your home or office, but every purchase also helps make a difference. The small profit from each calendar sold will go directly to the Greener Peebles charity, to support the community garden.

You can order a calendar from the Greener Peebles garden (cash or card) during staffed sessions. Pop in to see us between 10am to 12 on the 29th and 30th October and 3rd and 6th November. There is an example of the calendar in the yurt at the garden. Or send an email to [email protected], and receive an email with details of how to make a bank transfer.

The last day to order a calendar is expected to be on Friday 6th November. Once we have the delivery scheduled from the printers, we will set some dates when calendars can be collected from the garden. Please check our Greener Peebles page for updates. Calendar orders cannot be posted.

The last few weeks of Grow Kids have been full to the brim of autumn activities: marvelling at beautiful beans ripening in their pods, digging up the last of the tatties, pressing more apple juice to share (special thanks to our volunteer leader for her support!), planting out winter veg in the tunnel, mud kitchen concocting, and the first few stories by the fire in our yurt, to name just a few 🛖🔥 Thank you to all the lovely families that have joined us. Enjoy these wee snippets!

Did you know that our Grow Kids sessions run all year round - January to December? We are big believers in the value of experiencing the wonders that all seasons have to offer, and autumn in the community garden has been full of delights so far 🍁🍂🥬

What better way to begin the chilly part of the year than with, er, chillies?! Yes - it's Fire C***r making time! That delicious, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal remedy made with a jarload of straight-talkin', heavyweight ingredients, including: horseradish, sage, thyme and rosemary straight from our herb garden; onions that we harvested and dried some weeks ago, that have been waiting patiently for their time to bring a tear to our eye (for all the right reasons); cayenne and Hungarian hot wax chillis fresh from our polytunnel; garlic; root ginger; and turmeric root. One day we hope to make our own liquid gold (aka apple c***r vinegar) for it too. Just as important as these fabulous foods is the spirit in which Fire C***r is made. We gather round the table to chop while we chat, we have a grand time together, and these good vibes go into the jar too! What a great way to spend a wet Friday morning! ☺️🌶🍏

As the summer harvests wane, we turn our attention to the next lot of veggies that are ready to step up to our dinner tables, including leeks, cabbages and black radishes. We’re continuing the seed sowing; keeping an eye on the brassicas - here’s looking at you, sprouts; and getting ready to plant out the pak choi and more cabbages. Winter salad is doing just fine in the shelter of Takiwatanga, but no doubt Slug Watch will continue!
We’re also preparing some more areas for more planters that can be worked at either seated or standing in order to increase the number of accessible growing spaces. Thank you to everyone who joined us for our volunteering sessions this week! 🍂🌱🌦️

A huge and heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who supported our fundraiser this year to get a defibrillator. Thanks to the charity London Hearts reaching out after seeing our Facebook post a couple of months ago, we have been able to purchase one sooner than expected. Thanks also to the fabulous folks at The Food Foundation, who, along with the team at the Victoria Park Centre, also have access to the defibrillator, who kindly put up the bracket to hang it on. It's great to now have this potentially life-saving equipment close to hand. Teamwork - makes the dream work 😄🥰💓🙏

🥬 🫘 🍂 A lovely autumnal week in the garden with the first ground frosts, the last of our summer harvests, and lots of beautiful ripening seeds (being left for wildlife or to save and sow next year).

At our open sessions, our brilliant volunteers have been planting out winter salads in the tunnel (mizuna, pak choi, winter lettuces, coriander, and mustard greens), continuing their mammoth effort tending to the very long strawberry patch, and enjoying harvests of winter squash, cabbages, beans and herbs.

We ended the week with some more apple fun, giving our wee press (now affectionally called Melanie!) a good outing. This delicious golden juice will go in the freezer until our midwinter volunteer celebration, where it'll be mulled with lots of warming spices 🫖 ❄️ 🍎

A special shout out this week to our incredible Watering Volunteer Team who have been coming every morning and evening, every week, for 6 months and are now laying down the watering cans for a well-earned break. We wouldn't be able to grow such fantastic food in the tunnel, bring plants through the exceptionally dry periods we're experiencing, or keep the treasured tunnel safe without them. Enormous thanks and well done 👏

When the day starts with a surprise visit from garden friends delivering big smiles and a box of home baking, you know it's going to be a good one 😋

We've been having a lovely time in the sunshine tending to our wee winter salad seedlings, prepping beds for them to grow in, and nestling the first ones in the ground. There have also been many strawberry babies potted up, and more brilliant blue paint going onto our new bed signage (erected by the excellent Erskine and Brown Garden Services). We're also now preparing 2 new areas which are being redesigned for raised beds - part of our ongoing commitment to increase the accessibility of the growing spaces in the garden.

Volunteers also had their monthly meeting (with good cheer, chat, tea and cake, of course), and then we welcomed our friends from Peebles High School as they cracked on with various tasks, generally doing a fab job helping look after the community growing spaces and their own plots.

Warm thanks to all that have given their time and good company to help in the garden this week, you're all simply marvellous! 🥬 🪏🍏

🌻🍎🥬 We've been easing into mellow autumn with our smallest gardeners this week as we begin a new block of Grow Kids.

It's been all about the harvesting - snipping, plucking and digging delicious veggies to snack on (yes, these kids chow down on raw kale!) and take home to share. Two gigantic potatoes were excavated, beautiful beans discovered, and we also continued the apple fun with a funky peeler/corer/slicer, which big and small kids got very excited about! Shared juicy apple rings in the warm sun was heaven.

Thanks to all our old and new friends that are joining us in the garden for adventures this autumn. We 💚 Grow Kids!
