The service for Derek Laidlaw is on the 19th June at 11am - St Bede's Chapel, Teeside Crematorium, Acklam Rd, Middlesbrough TS5 7HD. Derek will be laid to rest at Linthorpe Cemetery. Following the burial there will be a celebration of the life of the Jinking Jock at the Rugby Club, Acklam Park.

Once again, the good people of Middlesbrough Rugby Club have been hit with a hammer blow. This time, we reel the to the news of the passing of our great friend Derek Laidlaw.

Derek was a superb player with silky hands and a legendary side-step. He was affectionately known as the ‘Jinking Jock.’

Aside from his multiple caps in the Middlesbrough First Team, Derek extended his career in order to help many up-and-coming Boro players develop their skills and confidence. He worked with the club’s burgeoning talent, providing coaching, skills and mentorship through the Wasps, A Team and the Extra B’s. His quips of advice, kindness and encouragement were an inspiration to many players, several of whom continued to significantly further their rugby careers.

A wonderful tourist, Derek would lead the post-match song sessions. He had a magnificent singing voice, a gentle wit and a lyrical soft Scottish brogue. On away trips on the buses, he would front the percussion section playing on the shelf rack.

We have very fond memories of Derek on and off the pitch. The Jinking Jock will never be forgotten by Middlesbrough RUFC.

MRUFC Tour 2026.

Memories made that will stand the test of time.
Laughs and jokes that will be told time and time again.
New friendships made and old friendships made that bit stronger.

So, we played a social side from Terenure College RUFC ,(TC) in Dublin on our tour at 7pm tonight. Many players didn't manage to stay 'dry' all day due to the late kick off time. So, within 7 minutes, we were 2 tries down. TC were playing attractive flowing rugby. 0 - 12. This was set to be a difficult game.
However, Boro rallied a little, and started to play some rugby of their own. Poor Quinny was distraught as we were doing uncontested scrummages, and our play was poor at best. From the kick off, TC scored a beautiful try, 0 -17 after 8 minutes.
So, a serious word or 2 was shared under our posts, and Boro rallied.
Brycey scored a great Boro try and kicked the conversion too.
Half time came with Middlesbrough Rugby Club losing 7 - 17.
The second half was a different story, with great play and some brave performers wanting to show that we can play this game.
Brad scored a great try with lots of forwards and backs interplay, 14 - 17.
More of the same led to a long range barnstorming try from Billy. Boro take a slim lead 17 -19
Shay then skillfully finishes a beautiful team try. 17 -26. Now TC push hard and score a welll deserved consolation try.
Final score TC 24, Boro 26. Thank you to our hosts Terenure College RUFC FOR great rugby and hospitality in the sunshine. We think we may meet again in years to come.
