Honouring Nigel Rees Ashton

A Life of Dedication and Passion

YES Rees, he was Welsh and always made sure everyone was aware of it.

Nigel Rees Ashton was a remarkable individual who left an indelible mark on all those who knew him. Even during his brief illness, Nigel remained committed to his community, attending meetings and the final game of the season at Riverwoods.

Family Above All:
Nigel’s greatest pride was his family. He leaves behind his wife, Hilary, and three children—George, Harry, and Isabella. Nigel’s affection for his family was evident, and he delighted in sharing stories about their lives, always with a twinkle in his eye.

Education and Sporting Achievements:
Nigel attended Borlase School in the 1970s where he entered fully into the life of the school and excelled as a sportsman, participating in rugby and cricket. His sporting journey included playing for Marlow Park Cricket Club as an opening batsman and wicketkeeper, where he faced formidable bowlers and achieved brilliant stumpings. One of the funniest moments was when Nigel tried to put on a cricket helmet—which was not commonly worn until this century—when he faced a Pakistan B player late one evening. Suffice to say, it was never going to work and Nigel, as ever, strode to the crease helmetless whilst the team were crying with laughter. Nigel also contributed as a cricket coach.

Rugby: A Passion and Calling:
Rugby was Nigel’s passion and being Welsh at a time when Wales were good at rugby, anyone else who was within earshot when we used to watch the Six Nations down at the club were painfully made aware of this fact. Nigel knew everything about the latest front row laws, so every time there was a stoppage in play, he would explain the nuances of front row play and why the game was stopped, while we feigned interest or got another drink.

He found his calling in the front row, representing various teams for Marlow and earning more than 300 caps in the 1st team. He travelled and played for Manly in Australia, although the exact team remains unknown. His technical expertise as a prop was well respected, as was his coaching with various youth teams, especially when his boys started to play.

Nigel was an old-fashioned front row, proud of being sent off, the black eyes, the broken fingers and always the first to buy his opponent a beer or two. He made friends in other clubs that endured.

Wit and Wanderlust:
As an avid tourist, Nigel would regale with his dry wit and exploitations on the various tours attended. Tours to Europe and the USA(Texas) and Canada where himself and a certain J.C took themselves off on a mini ski tour … sorry what goes on tour stays on tour

Aswell as rugby tours, Nigel travelled the world … rugby and cricket in South Africa and Australia; USA, China, Europe and the Middle East for work.

Professional Life and Community Engagement:
Nigel’s character, personality and powers of persuasion built a highly successful career in sales, he explored entrepreneurial ventures and worked for several local authorities. His presence was felt not only on the field but also within his professional and community life.

Beyond his sporting and professional achievements, Nigel was renowned for his infectious humour and unwavering generosity. He brought laughter to every gathering, delighting friends with his entertaining anecdotes and insightful perspectives, whether debating rugby tactics or sharing tales from his travels. Nigel’s kindness and camaraderie ensured that newcomers felt welcome and valued, and he had a remarkable ability to lift spirits.

Most recently, Nigel was the Chairman of Marlow Rugby Club—a position he held with great pride. He served with great dedication, commitment and positivity.

Legacy:
His legacy lives on in the cherished memories of those who had the privilege to know him and in the enduring bonds he fostered within his community. As we remember Nigel, we celebrate not only his accomplishments but the warmth, wit and steadfast friendship that made him truly irreplaceable.

Our thoughts are with Hilary, George, Harry, and Isabella. Thank you, Nigel, for the memories and the joy you brought to those around you.

We will update you on details of the celebration of life in due course.

We’re excited to share some important news about the future of the gym facilities at Marlow RUFC — and how it will benefit you as a member.

Following a period of underuse, the gym space will soon be revitalised through a new partnership with local coaching business, Cultivate Fitness. The new gym facility will be operated by Cultivate Fitness and a separate membership will be required to use the gym and attend their classes. MRUFC members will, however, benefit from a discounted rate.

This change brings significant investment into the gym facility, transforming it into a modern, high-quality strength and conditioning space — at no cost to the club — while helping us create a more active and vibrant environment throughout the week.

About Cultivate Fitness
Cultivate Fitness is an established Strength and Conditioning community based in Marlow that has built a fantastic reputation for helping people of all ages and abilities become fitter, stronger and healthier. They offer a range of structured, coach-led sessions, including:

Strength Training
Hyrox
Bootcamp (Metcon)
Hybrid
Ladies Lifting
Gents Lifting
Mat-Based HIIT
Strong Mums

What this means for you
Fully refurbished gym facilities
A 15% discount for MRUFC members that provides access to an upgraded gym facility and a wide range of coached training sessions that include enhanced support for player fitness, development and injury prevention
More activity, energy and community engagement at the club throughout the week
Just as importantly, rugby remains our priority. All training schedules, matchdays and club events will continue as normal and are fully protected within this arrangement.

This partnership is designed to strengthen the club as a whole — improving facilities, increasing use of our site and generating income that supports MRUFC’s long-term sustainability.

What happens next?
We’ll be sharing further details soon, including launch timings, introductory sessions and how MRUFC members can get involved. In the meantime, if you have any initial questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

We believe this is a really positive step forward for the club and look forward to seeing many of you benefit from it.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support.

✍️ Spicer Returns to Riverwoods! ✍️

We’re delighted to announce that Alex Spicer has returned to Marlow after several years away from the club, having most recently been playing rugby in London.

A powerful second row who is equally effective at 6 and 8, Alex joins us from Hammersmith & Fulham, where he competed at Level 5 over the past few seasons. Having recently moved back to the area, he’s buzzing to get started with our newly refreshed squad.

Alex brings not only physicality on the field, but also outstanding leadership, experience, and presence that will be invaluable to our young squad.

We can’t wait to see him back in Riverwoods colours when pre-season begins in a few weeks’ time 💛🖤

✍️ Marlow secure exciting young second row signing ✍️

We’re pleased to confirm another addition ahead of the new season, with Harry Mackenzie joining the club from Hemel Hempstead.

After coming through the youth setup at Hemel, Harry makes the switch to Riverwoods as travelling from Flackwell Heath makes Marlow a better fit for him.

A talented young second row with plenty of potential, Harry will add quality and depth to the squad, and we’re excited to see his development in Marlow colours.

We look forward to welcoming Harry to the club and seeing him join up with the squad over the next few weeks 🖤💛🏉
