🏊 Gary's Water Safety Tip | Personal Safety in the Water

Gary, one of our swimming teachers at Active Luton, continues our Drowning Prevention Week series with another simple but potentially life-saving tip.

If you find yourself in difficulty in the water:
✅ Roll onto your back, spread out like a star and float
✅ Stay calm and control your breathing
✅ Once recovered, call for help and head to safety

Learning to swim is one of the most important life skills for staying safer around water. It helps build confidence, awareness and ability to respond calmly if something goes wrong. Through our Learn to Swim program, we support children and young people to develop these essential skills for life.

Watch Gary's tip and help us share this important message during Drowning Prevention Week

🏊 Gary's Water Safety Tip | Helping Someone in Difficulty

As part of Drowning Prevention Week, Gary, one of our swimming teachers at Active Luton is sharing simple but potentially life-saving water safety advice.

Today’s tip: What should you do if you see someone struggling in water?
✅ Encourage them to get to the side
✅ Use something they can reach for
✅ If available, throw a floating object such as a ball, bottle, or buoyant item for them to hold onto while they kick towards the side
❌ Don't enter the water yourself
📞 Call 999 if needed

Learning to swim is one of the best ways to stay safer around water. Through our Learn to Swim program, we help children build confidence, develop water safety awareness and gain skills for life.

Watch Gary's tip and help us spread the important message by sharing it with family and friends.

🌊 Drowning Prevention Week is here, and it's a timely reminder that water safety can save lives.

Whether you're heading to the beach, a river, lake, canal or swimming pool this summer, knowing how to stay safe around water is essential.
The Water Safety Code is easy to remember:
✅ Stop and think
✅ Stay together
✅ Float
✅ Call 999 in an emergency

Many accidental drownings happen because people don't recognise the dangers around water or don't know what to do if something goes wrong.
The best place to start? Learning to swim. Swimming lessons give children confidence in and around water while teaching vital life-saving skills that can make all the difference in an emergency.

Please take a moment to watch this important video made by the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) and share it with family and friends.

🌳 Seriously Social About the Environment

At Active Luton, we’re committed to reducing our environmental impact and building a more sustainable future for our communities.

Through our Green Champion initiative, an employee-led programme, we work together to identify and deliver eco-friendly improvements that reduce our carbon footprint and support Luton’s 2040 vision.

Here are some of the ways we’re making a difference:
♻️ Energy-generating solar panels at Inspire: Luton Sports Village and High Town Gym & Wellbeing Centre
♻️ Modern pool covers that help retain heat and reduce chemical use
♻️ Energy-efficient LED lighting installed across our facilities
♻️ PrintReleaf Exchange – in the first 7 months, we offset 94,000 sheets of paper, equivalent to 11.21 trees reforested through certified global projects.
♻️ We invested in Combined Heat and Power systems at Inspire: Luton Sports Village and Lea Manor Recreation Centre, helping to prevent 224 tonnes of CO2
♻️ Low-flow shower units installed at Inspire: Luton Sports Village, reducing water usage while maintaining user experience.

Every improvement adds up to real impact – and we’re proud to keep driving sustainability forward 💚

🤝 Seriously Social About Inclusion

Inclusion is about making sure everyone has the opportunity to take part, feel comfortable, and access support in a way that works for them.

From women-only activities, pre- and post-natal classes to accessible centres and disability -friendly programs, we are committed to creating welcome spaces and services for people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds.

Thanks to funding from Luton Rising, our Go4Less Advantage scheme provides heavily subsidised access to physical activity for people who might otherwise be unable to take part due to financial constraints.

We understand that everyone’s needs are different, which is why we continue to adapt and develop our services so more people across Luton can get involved and feel supported 💙
