✨It’s not about working through injuries, it’s about training around them to strengthen and recover ✨
Since I took up running ‘properly’ around 4 years ago, I have suffered with knee pain on and off.
It didn’t matter if I rested it, iced it, trained through, it still niggled at me as I hit longer distances. You’d think being a sports therapist, I’d know what to do😂
Thats until I actually followed a plan, trained specifically for my running needs & not just lifting heavy s**t (even though it’s soooo fun). I focused on my problem areas through single leg, balance work and high volume, but I also made sure I was strength training other areas too like my upper, core & glutes.
The plan worked, the consistency worked, and with my recent achievement at Ultra X Wales (30km and over 1000m elevation) I did it!
My first half marathon distance with no knee pain!!
I also trained with the right supports, I left the k-tape on the side (sweat, mud & rain doesn’t help the stickiness…) and started using Bearhug knee sleeves. The compression supported my joints and actually stayed in place!
Training may be boring, may be mundane, but your consistency, routine and drive to complete your goals will make it all worth it! You don’t need to add more exercises or spend hours in the gym, you need to train effectively, efficiently and structure it around your goals🫶🏼
P.S if you don’t strength train already as a runner, DO IT!! X
