For years I thought feeling good on holiday meant earning it first.

Restrict for weeks before. Cut back hard. Do extra cardio. Arrive having “done the work.”
And then spend the holiday swinging between guilt and bingeing because my body had been starved for weeks and was making up for it the moment I relaxed.

I thought the problem was me. That I just didn’t have enough discipline to hold it together.
It wasn’t me. It was the approach.

When you chronically restrict before a holiday your body arrives depleted, flat and running on empty. The moment you eat normally it stores aggressively. The hunger you’ve been suppressing comes back harder than ever. And the restrict-binge-spiral-restart cycle begins again.

Doing extra cardio. Trying to shrink as fast as possible before you get on that plane. I know why you do it.

But here’s what’s actually happening when you crash diet before a holiday:
