We've published Sport England’s Devolution Policy Position Statement.

It recognises the opportunity created by the transfer of decision-making powers to local communities and highlights how this change can improve access to sport and physical activity, helping more people lead healthier, active lives.

The statement highlights the vital role sport and physical activity can play in supporting local ambitions for growth, prevention and wellbeing, and the opportunities devolution creates when it’s embedded across local agendas and priorities, including:

- Economic development and regeneration
- Transport and local infrastructure
- Skills and employment support
- Housing and strategic planning
- Environment and climate change
- Health, wellbeing and public service reform
- Public safety
- Culture

Through stronger local collaboration, we can help more people and communities benefit from being active, tackle inequalities and reduce inactivity across the country.

Thank you to all of the amazing people nationwide who give their time to volunteer so we have spotlighted a few fabulous volunteers to get started:

🩵 Volunteering sparked Andres’ passion for sport and youth leadership at his local community organisation, LS14. Joining a StreetGames’ NextGen leadership programme enabled him to gain valuable qualifications and experience in coaching and volunteering, plus opened the door to becoming a Young Advisor, where he used his experiences to design and deliver a residential for other young volunteers from across the UK.
🩵 Kareem has been part of GoodGym since 2023 and has done 84 Good Deeds all over London, and does most of his volunteer tasks in Tower Hamlets. He likes to get involved with environmental tasks, for example he recently attended the session at Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park which is a unique and vital nature reserve and heritage site in East London.

Who do you want to thank for their voluntary work? Let us know!

To mark Volunteers' Week, Sport England's head of volunteering reviews the data on the latest Active Lives Adults Survey results and highlights the changes needed for a more sustainable and inclusive volunteer workforce.

"If we’re serious about improving the diversity of our volunteer base then designing volunteer opportunities around lived experience, making them more flexible, inclusive and relevant is essential."

Tumble Twist and Turn (TTT) are a gymnastics club based in St Helens, set up in 2020.

An increasing member base came a strain on coaches, which presented challenges when looking to recruit, due to the high demand for coaches and fitness instructors in their local area. TTT started developing volunteers internally to overcome this and ensure their offer could continue.

One of their core values is the holistic culture they’ve built around their coaching. Coaches look to support people to the fullest, rather than be solely gymnastics-focussed.

This , we’re celebrating the amazing 11 million adults who gave their time to volunteer 🤝

Volunteering doesn’t just support communities - it benefits volunteers too:
đź”· People who volunteer regularly tend to have better mental wellbeing
đź”· Some inequalities still exist, with lower participation among those facing multiple barriers
đź”· Men make up 62% of weekly volunteers supporting sport and physical activity
🔷 Volunteering is growing again but hasn’t yet returned to long-term levels

There’s still more to do, but every hour given makes a difference.
