The Electronics Group The Electronics Group are a specialist electronics manufacturing support business based in Leeds.

History

Formerly Electronics Yorkshire, The Electronics Group are experts in the industry with a vast array of knowledge in both Electronics Manufacturing and Engineering. Established in 2003, Electronics Yorkshire (originally part of Bradford College) has been providing Training and Support and has been both an Authorised IPC Training Centre and Distributor for many years. Electronics Yorkshire’s Advanced Training Centre (based in Leeds) is the largest of its kind in the UK and will continue to be the Head Office for The Electronics Group serving each division of the group. In 2013 we introduced a dedicated Electronics Engineering Apprenticeship at Intermediate Level 2 and in 2015 we added an Advanced Level 3. We are currently developing a Higher Level 4 for introduction in 2017. The change to The Electronics Group recognises the larger role, that the company now provides for the industry across the whole of UK and occasionally overseas. A new addition to coincide with the introduction of The Electronics Group is temporary and permanent recruitment for Electronics Production and Engineering staff. The Electronics Group will continue to provide IPC Training, Practical Skills Training and Technical Inspection Services as done in previous years as we continue to develop and grow as an organisation. Our Vision

Our vision is “to be the first choice support company for the UK Electronics Industry and its people” and we are continually working on developing our services to achieve this.

Last week, we looked at the first steps in fault finding, before you pick up any tools.

For many people, the logical next step is to reach for a multimeter.

A multimeter can tell you a lot: whether voltage is present, whether a component has continuity, whether resistance is as expected and where a circuit may not be behaving as it should.

But effective fault finding isn’t simply about taking measurements. It’s about knowing:

🔹 What to measure
🔹 Where to measure it
🔹 Which setting to use
🔹 What result you should expect
🔹 What the reading tells you about your next step
When used with a methodical approach, the multimeter becomes one of the most valuable tools in the fault-finding process.

Tomorrow is World Mental Health Day. 💚

At The Electronics Group, we believe mental health matters every day.

Everyone faces challenges, many of which aren’t visible to those around them. That’s why creating a workplace where people feel supported and able to speak openly is so important to us.

We're proud to offer all our employees access to free mental health support through our private health care scheme which gives each employee 24/7 mental health support online and talking therapies appointments.

This World Mental Health Day, we encourage everyone to take a moment to check in with yourself, with a colleague or with someone you care about. Sometimes, a simple conversation can make a real difference.

When a faulty electronic assembly lands on your bench, what do you check first?

Our Training Manager, Kevin, recently shared his advice on the best place to begin. Before reaching for your test equipment, he recommends starting with the basics:

🔹 First make sure you have a basic understanding of the components and the roles they play within the circuit.

🔹 Carry out a thorough visual inspection. Look for obvious signs of damage, such as burnt components, corrosion, cracks or loose connections.

🔹 Refer to the circuit diagrams, if they’re available. These can help you understand how the circuit should operate and identify where the problem may be.

🔹 Compare the faulty equipment with a working unit, where possible. Differences between the two may provide useful clues and help narrow down the cause.

Taking a methodical approach from the very start can save you time and give you a clearer direction for the next stage of diagnosis.

We’re delighted to introduce you to Vicki, the newest member of our training team! 👋

Based at our Cirencester Training Centre, Vicki joined us at the beginning of the month as an IPC Trainer and she brings an incredible amount of industry knowledge with her.

Vicki has spent 26 years in electronics manufacturing, working on products used in rail signalling. During that time, she built extensive experience across PCB assembly, soldering, rework, coating and plenty more.

When she’s not working, Vicki is likely to be getting lost in a thriller or horror novel. Her favourite book is Billy Summers by Stephen King. She’s also a big fan of true crime documentaries and podcasts and enjoys a good movie or trip to the cinema 🎬

Fun fact about Vicki, she has seen the Broadway theatre production of 'The Iceman Cometh' which starred Denzel Washington, Austin Butler and David Morse, in New York!

Are you looking to get IPC certified but you’re unsure of the difference between CIS, CSE, and CIT?

For each IPC standard you can be certified to either CIS, CSE or CIT level. Which level you choose will depend on your role and how you intend to use your new certification.

🔹 CIS — Certified IPC Specialist
This level of certification is ideal for technicians, operators, inspectors, engineers, and quality personnel who need to understand and correctly apply a specific IPC standard in their daily work.

🔸 CSE — Certified Standards Expert
This is for experienced professionals who serve as their organization’s subject-matter experts. A CSE interprets standards, helps resolve technical disagreements, supports process development and answers standards-related questions.

🔹 CIT — Certified IPC Trainer
CIT is for professionals who want to be authorised to deliver IPC training and administer certification exams for CIS candidates, within the standards for which they are certified.

All of the IPC courses we run (except for the IPC CID and IPC CID+ courses) can be delivered to CIS, CSE or CIT levels. If you are still unsure which is best for you then give our team a call on 0113 274 4270 and we will be happy to advise you.

🔹 IPC CID+ (Certified Interconnect Designer Advanced)
An advanced course for experienced PCB designers who wants to build on their existing knowledge.
