Spofforth Golf Course – Greens Improvement Bulletin
Following a recent course walk involving an Amenity Seed Specialist, an Agronomist, and the local Indigrow representative, we are pleased to provide members with an update on the condition and progress of the greens.
After a particularly challenging previous year—characterised by prolonged drought stress, uneven ball roll, dry patching, prostrate growth and horizontal tillering of invasive grasses, along with patchy coverage and moss ingress—it is encouraging to report a marked improvement across the putting surfaces.
This season, a structured fertiliser and overseeding programme, supplied by Indigrow and implemented by the Curtis family, Head Greenkeeper Iain, and the wider grounds team, has delivered significant positive results. These inputs have been carefully supported and enhanced by a well-planned and consistently executed cultural maintenance programme led by Iain.
The combined approach has resulted in:
• Improved turf density and more uniform coverage
• Noticeably truer and more consistent ball roll
• Reduction in dry patch and moss presence
• Better resilience and recovery of finer grasses
The visiting specialists were particularly complimentary of the progress made within a relatively short period, highlighting the effective integration of nutritional, seeding, and cultural practices.
While continued work will be required to further refine and maintain these standards, members should take confidence in the clear direction of travel and the ongoing commitment to delivering high-quality playing surfaces.
We thank all involved for their dedication and look forward to further improvements throughout the season.

News from our fertiliser (Ingigro) and seed (DSV) suppliers after a course visit this week.
Good to know we are on the right track and heading in the right direction.
We know we have more work to do but we are up to the task.

Ladies Day was well attended and all went well. I had meetings this morning and at lunchtime so I was unable to offer any assistance or advice - but judging by the balls on the practice ground a good warm up was had by all.
A third meeting was scheduled but postponed so I took the opportunity to get some rough cut on the lower part of the course.
The photograph shows the 5th hole towards the green, over the pond. The stripes were there before I got cracking with the rough. Such a good golf hole!
Cutting acres of grass is tiring but also therapeutic.

Ladies tee on the 4th hole update;
I have just tested the tee - looks much more open than before the removal of the 2 branches ….. but another needs to go. I clipped it with a pretty good swing for me.
Will have a word with our tree surgeon!
