Welcome to Friday Focus! Every Friday we’re going to focus on a specific exercise you might find in one of our classes here at Puzzle Pilates.
✨This week our Friday Focus is on footwork!✨
One of our fundamental exercises, you’ll find almost every single one of our classes starting off carriage work with some footwork. Used to kick off the warm up, starting to wake up the muscles of the legs, in particular quads, hamstrings and glutes.
Footwork is a great way to start on the carriage and prepare for your class, with each variation adding something slightly different. Whether it’s activating your inner thigh muscles with your feet in the Pilates V position or the calf muscles with your toes on the footbar, this exercise will start to get your legs ready and awake!
Some important points to remember with your footwork:
🔘 Toes up towards the ceiling - activate the muscles down the backs of the legs (your posterior chain)
🔘 Keep knees soft - avoid locking the knees out to help protect your knee joints
🔘 Use the inhale to control the carriage home - don’t let the springs take over
🔘 Keep heels lifted when toes are on the footbar - keep the calf muscles activated throughout the movement
As your footwork progresses we might start to add on other layers such as extending the leg over the footbar, adding some pulses half way home, or adding some toe taps with the ball tucked behind your knee!
What’s your favourite footwork variation?
