Crieff secured a dramatic two-point victory away to promoted league champions Bannockburn on Saturday, with Fraser Gillies crossing in the corner with the final play of a fiercely contested encounter.

Having won their opening league fixture of the season, Crieff travelled to Bannockburn with a squad of 17 knowing they faced a significant test. Bannockburn won the league last season and had also started their home campaign with a victory, while matches between the two sides have traditionally been tight affairs. This one proved no different.

Crieff lost the toss and were forced to play uphill and into the wind in the first half, making for a difficult opening period. Bannockburn looked to make the most of the conditions and their powerful ball carriers, with their number eight in particular proving a constant threat.

Despite the territorial disadvantage, it was Crieff who opened the scoring in spectacular fashion. A scrum turnover inside their own 22 sparked an excellent length-of-the-field attack, which was finished off by Scott Drummond for the game’s opening try.

Bannockburn responded strongly, crossing for two tries of their own and a penalty as the home side made their physicality and favourable conditions count.

Crieff, however, refused to let them pull clear. A dangerous high tackle on winger Dan Marshall as he threatened to score in the corner resulted in a penalty try, bringing the deficit to 3 points at half-time and leaving everything to play for.

With the wind and slope now in their favour, Crieff entered the second half confident of taking control. Instead, the contest remained extremely even. Crieff struggled to establish the continuity they were looking for, with unforced errors and a mounting penalty count repeatedly handing possession and territory back to Bannockburn.

The home side spent long periods battering away at the Crieff line, but they were met by some outstanding and resolute defence.

Having absorbed the pressure, Crieff struck at the other end through David Lyle, who crossed in the corner to give the visitors a two point advantage.

That lead came under sustained pressure as Bannockburn again laid siege to the Crieff line. Eventually, with around seven minutes remaining, the hosts found a way through and moved three points ahead.

With time running out, Bannockburn appeared to have done enough. Crieff’s penalty count had continued to climb and opportunities to build sustained attacking phases had been limited.

But there was one final twist.

With the last play of the match, Crieff produced the attack they needed. Fraser Gillies found his way over in the corner to sn**ch a remarkable victory by two points and spark celebrations among the travelling side.

It was a hard fought win against a physical Bannockburn side and one built on determination, some excellent attacking rugby when opportunities arose, and tremendous defence under sustained pressure.

There will also be areas for Crieff to work on. Greater continuity through the phases and reducing both the unforced error and penalty counts will be priorities.

Nevertheless, to travel away with a squad of 17 and come through such a demanding contest with a last gasp victory represents an excellent result for Crieff and maintains their winning start to the league campaign.

A tremendous effort from the Crieff boys and a victory earned right to the final whistle.

Here is your overview of what we are up to this month

Each team took a few minutes to settle. An early rip by Robert Cockburn and a break through the centre put Panmure under pressure. A couple of penalties in the Panmure 22 led to a straightforward pass out left for Bob, who went over for the opening score for Crieff. Conversion missed by Pool.

The next 10 minutes saw both teams thinking they remembered how to play flowing rugby. They were mistaken, with many handling errors for the opening game of the season.

Crieff, inside the Panmure 10m, stole the lineout and the centre did the damage, breaking two tackles and then popping to the supporting back row, Ruaridh Kerr for the second try, which was converted.

Panmure finally found some form and put a series of elegant phases together for a real team try. Converted: 12-7.

After a period of wearing each other down, a quick penalty taken by Pool and a break to 5m with a pop to scrum-half Master Scott resulted in a converted try.

Brilliant attack by Panmure down the right was only thwarted by strong tackle on tackle by Captain Pool to prevent what looked like a sure try down the right.

Chaos in the Crieff half, Panmure eventually turned pressure into points with another team effort over the line by the speedy backs. Conversion missed. 19-12.

On the stroke of half-time, a threatening attack by Panmure was thwarted by an interception by the young Full Back, on debut Thomas Pounder, who broke away for an individual try. 26-12 HT.

Five minutes into the 2nd half, the Crieff flyer on the wing, Kyle Mckeggie took a beautifully floated pass to dive over for the second-half opener. Panmure returned the compliment two minutes later with a multiple-phase try, converted. 31-19 with only seven minutes gone.

From the halfway line, a lovely chip and chase by stand-off Pool saw him through for an unchallenged converted try. 38-19.

Penalty for Panmure on Crieff’s 22 led to 10 tough phases for Panmure, with Crieff defending well but ultimately conceding an inevitable try. 38-24.

Two jinks and a pop by warrior Scott, followed by a pop to Ruaridh Hutchinson, resulted in a converted try by Pool. 45-24.

A slightly wayward kick straight out by ho**er Iagen Anderson saw play slow momentarily.

Match Summary

Panmure had arguably greater backline skills, with a fabulous game by their stand-off, controlling the plays and executing some skilfully timed inside pops. But Crieff’s tenacity and individual skill won the day, for a scoreline which didn’t reflect the parity of the game.
