Comrie CC recently won League B of the Live Active indoor 6-a-side cricket competition held at Bertha Park over the months of December and January. Wins against Doune & Dunblane and GlenAlmond school saw Comrie taking the top spot on their first attempt. Congratulations to all involved.

I think it would be fair to say the 4th annual Charlie Gibbons tournament at the Laggan Park was a great success today. Despite a wee bit of drizzle early on, proceedings were enlivened by a touring team from Wolverhampton who, whilst somewhat lubricated from the off, very much appreciated the grandeur of their surroundings. They kept the tempo of the afternoon high all day(despite a mid-afternoon mass snooze on their part😂). Team Skye (present on the the day as the last of the team labs), took the title for the first time, congrats to Captain Dave Dowse and team for a great batting performance in the final.
Too many highlights, a man batting in a kilt, incredible diving fielding, huge sixes and general merriment. Special thanks to the travellers up from Dollar, Torrance (the wandering gypsys), Doune and Gargunnock. Looking forward to next year 😉

Match report, 17 August

On a baking day that made it feel more like the WACA than Laggan Park, Comrie played against the wandering side Torrance CC (I think for the second time this season).
Torrance won the toss and opted to bat. Their openers were decent, and enjoyed the hard Dukes ball and a rapid outfield, racing along to 79 off 8 overs. Dani and Cameron toiled hard in the heat and eventually dismissed an opener each. The first change duo of Andy R (wicket) and Archie (three wickets) pulled Comrie back into the game, bowling tight lines and Archie in particular extracting bounce and away swing. By now the Torrance No.7, a proper league-playing-mercenary had come to the crease and was successfully farming the strike and hitting boundaries at will. Rob picked up a final wicket off a surprisingly tidy 3 overs and Torrance finished on a decent, but gettable 201. The fielding was excellent, with great catches by Chris, Jonathan and Cameron, and tidy work on the boundary by Hamish amongst others.
After a terrific tea provided by Torrance (including freshly bbq’d chicken, no less), Jonathan and Archie went out in the searing heat, unfortunately succumbing to some accurate bowling without making huge inroads to the total. Rob and Cameron started to get the scoreboard ticking but also fell shortly after. Chris threatened to get going but was pinned back, and the wickets kept falling steadily. Andy, Mark and Hamish provided stout resistance to ensure that we used most of our overs. At the 15 over mark we were at the required run rate but in the end were all out for 147. The Torrance opening partnership – and the fact that no Comrie player scored over 16 - was ultimately the difference.
An enjoyable game, and three of us went to The Royal for a drink with some of their players.

Tournament at Laggan Park this Saturday, all welcome to use the (cash only) bar and pizza truck. 11am start, 4 teams 1 victor!

Comrie CC travelled to Doune for our return fixture after a close game at the Laggan Park went down to the penultimate ball back in early July. Comrie won the toss and choose to bat but were soon questioning that decision, reduced to 109 all out from just 22 of the available 30 overs. Rob Kinder batted well once more for his 64 with Hamish Graham accompanying him for a useful partnership but no team mate was able to contribute double figure runs aside from Cameron Harrison with 10. Cameron then became the first victim of a young Doune lads hat-trick alongside James Perry and Archie McCarrol. They can take comfort in the fact they will be part of a story likely be told for many decades to come!
A small total to defend then, but the Comrie bowling attack went about their business with some success, one wicket apiece from A Beale, A Rogerson and C Harrison reducing Doune to 51-3 after 19 overs. Good catches and great close in fielding from James Perry and Archie McCarrol kept things tight and piled the pressure on, with our opponents, needing nearly 6 an over with 9 to go. Comrie found themselves in with a glimmer of a chance. The Doune batsmen however started to show that the run rate was very much within their abilities until Cameron Harrison and Dani Hassan struck late to bring new batters to the crease with only 6 overs remaining to get the 25 runs remaining. However, one of the new batters had no hesitation marching down the wicket and launching a number of deliveries back down the ground for a succession of boundaries. Doune scored the 110 required with 3 overs and 5 wickets remaining….at least a tea was on offer this weekend. Torrance CC visit the Laggan Park next Sunday.

The most surprising thing about Comrie’s game against a Penicuik XI on Sunday was perhaps not the result. It was the news that, after toiling hard in the field for 30 overs, we were expected to buy our own tea from Greggs. No matter.

By then Comrie, batting second, had been set 174 on a decent track, overlooked by the Pentland Hills on a sunny, breezy day.

Dani Hassan and Cameron Harrison got us off to a great start, bowling tight lines and removing their top three in short order. Archie McCarrol and Andy Rogerson (whose 3 overs for 6 runs makes his claim that this will be his penultimate season barely believable) continued the good work, Archie picking up another wicket and finishing his 6 overs tidily.

A wicket apiece followed for David Oates and Rob, though these brought about the arrival of the Penicuik “guns” who started hitting more boundaries, particularly tucking into the leg-side pies served up by the newly returned Rob Kinder.

The return of Cameron stemmed the flow before further lofty blows took their score to 173.

David (21) and Jonny Carpenter (19) laid a solid foundation for us, showing great patience in the face of some teasingly slow bowling. Archie and Cameron smacked some crisp boundaries but succumbed relatively cheaply. Rob and Doug Elgar(24) kept things ticking over, though the required run rate was going up. This led to a frantic period of slash and burn, as Rob’s eagerness to stay on strike in the hope that he might finally find the middle of his bat led to him run out Doug and then Andy.

The final two overs were tense. Fair wide-ball decisions by Comrie umpires sent one of the opposition wild with rage. With 9 required off the last, we got over the line with one ball to spare.

Thanks as always to Kenny Howatt for scoring, and to great energy and efforts in the field, particularly Dougie’s promising glove work and by Jonny’s good lady, Emma, who stepped in admirably as our 11th player.

Good game and perhaps they’ll come to Comrie next year. And we’ll serve them tea at tea time.

Comrie lost by 31 runs to a strong Gargunnock/Kippen team this evening. The visitors batted first and despite being quickly reduced to 29-2 by Alec Beale (2-21), a couple of batters came in and scored quickly (including a St Modans 1st team player) pushing the run rate up to around 7 an ove with both retiring on 30 not out. Cameron Harrison (1-25) bowled a good spell taking the wicket of the remaining opener, caught at mid-wicket by Dani Hassan, missing out on a difficult caught and bowled chance and Archie McCarroll (1-27) bowled well for his wicket, finding the edge of the bat, with Chris Sangster taking the catch at slip. Gargunnock/Kippen finished on an impressive 148-4 off 20 overs.
In response Alec and Johnathan Carpeneter got off to a measured start going along at 5 an over, running well between the wickets but failing to put the bad balls away. Alec ran himself out on 14, calling for a single that existed only in his own imagination, leaving us on 45-1 and already 30 runs behind where they had been at the same point. Cameron Harrison then came out and led the charge with some superb hitting, retiring on 30 after only a few overs and earning himself another go next match at number 3. After Johnathan also carried his bat for 30, Chris Sangster and Paul Livesey were left needing 45 off the last two overs. Both carried their bat for 13 and 11 respectively. Along with some ‘interesting’ umpiring decisions from the two umpires and a couple of missed runouts from us in the field, another game that could have been closer than it was. A more positive performance with the bat this week but plenty to practice in the nets at Dallerie on Wednesday.
