It’s been a busy few days for the lads in the Community Café. ☕️

Getting into a routine, working alongside each other, serving customers and just getting stuck in with the day-to-day jobs.

It’s all part of life at Elisha House and the little things that help build confidence along the way. 💪

We had a creative writing session with Donna Worthington ✍️

⭐️Our next star performer to highlight from Elisha House Recovery Community and the recent Theatre of Hope performance at The Muni Theatre is Kyle. After growing up around addiction in childhood, Kyle followed a similar path into adulthood and has been suffering from addiction for 14 years. He describes his experience of addiction as being filled with anxiety, constantly feeling like other people are out to get you. His motivation to enter rehab is his son and aims to break the cycle of addition that he has experience with his own parents. We spoke with another of our Theatre of Hope performers, Darren to hear about his unique experience of addiction and how he found himself on the stage. Darren was stuck in addiction for 33 years after using substances for the first time at only 11 years old. A frightful but real way of life for many of the residents that come through Elisha House Recovery Community

Darren describes his experience with Arts for Wellbeing and the theatre performance as lighting him up and reigniting his passion for motivational speaking. Watch this space, he’s ready for a life on the screen!

James got his first prison sentence at 17 years old, after following his friends and starting to take drugs at just 16. Since then, he has been in and out of prison for the last 30 years. When he first came along to Elisha House Recovery Community he wasn’t quite ready for recovery but tells us he learnt something about himself each time he was there. James left Elisha over 6 months ago after being part of the Thread of Hope play at The Muni Theatre. He knew he’d struggle with the daunting aspect of the theatre performance but describes it as giving him ‘a sense of purpose’ as well as bringing him closer to his family, both incredible achievements to him.

After losing his brother earlier in the year to addiction, Darren found himself struggling to cope. His family was the driving force in getting him into recovery as he wanted to ensure that his mother didn't lose another son.

Darren tells us that his performance during the recent Theatre of Hope show at The Muni Theatre in July actually made his sister believe he was back using, but was really just some good acting thanks to the Arts for Wellbeing - Pendle workshops he's been partaking in. 📽️Hear Darren's full story in the video below.

There’s more going on behind the counter than just making coffee. ☕️

For some of our residents, working in the café is a chance to get into a routine, chat to customers, learn new things and build their confidence.

It might look like a normal shift, but there’s a lot happening along the way. 💪

Darren talks openly about what life was like for him before recovery and how different things are now.

He now lives independently and works with us, helping to run the Youth Project, which is something he’s really proud of.

We’ve been brushing up on our coffee-making skills at the Community Café ☕️

Some of our staff and volunteers had a bit of barista training this week, learning how to make a proper coffee and getting plenty of practice in while they were at it.

Safe to say, no one was short of caffeine by the end of the day 😂

A nice milestone for the lads as they move forward with their programme. 👏

Ste and Ben have completed the programme and are now moving into stage three, while Max, Paul, Ben, Darren and Kevin have graduated stage one and are moving into stage two.

It was also great to see some friends and family there to celebrate with them and share the day.

Plenty of progress to be proud of! ❤️
