THOUGHTS ARE MADE UP OF INGREDIENTS
Every thought you have is built from sensory information. The only way the brain can store, recall or imagine anything is through the senses. That means thoughts are constructed from visual images, sounds, feelings, smells and tastes. In NLP and coaching, these are often called representations. While all five senses can be involved, the three main ingredients are usually visual (what you see internally), auditory (what you hear internally) and kinaesthetic (what you feel emotionally or physically).
So whether it is a fear, a memory, anxiety about the future, or even the way you remember a conversation, your mind is using those sensory ingredients to build the experience. Think of a thought like a recipe. If you change the ingredients, you change the recipe. Alter the picture, lower the volume of the inner voice, soften the feeling, or change the emotional intensity, and the experience itself can begin to change. That is why it is possible to change the way you think and feel about fears, memories and past events by changing the sensory ingredients the brain is using to represent them.
In this clip from The Feel Good Hour Podcast, I explain why anxious thoughts can feel so convincing and why not every thought deserves your trust.
