PDA part 47: why do some PDA children have trigger words?

You’ve been teaching or supporting a PDA child for a while and, whilst it isn’t always easy, you feel like you know them well and have strategies that work.

And then out of nowhere you say something or they overhear something from another child and they reach crisis point.

This could be due to sensory memory causing an old, negative emotion to pop up again.

PDA children can have heighten sensory responses due to their levels of anxiety which is why I’ll go into this in more detail in my online workshop.

Honestly? I’m getting bored of all the men in my comments who ignore my messaging to give me unsolicited advice about my weight, hair, looks and style. It’s tedious.
Mostly, I can brush it off, but when Billybunchofnumbers with in his profile starts making fun of my lashes… that’s too far!

“Bet you think those crazy lashes make you more attractive to men 🤣🤣🤣.”

I’m a perimenopausal, neurodivergent woman and I don’t have enough Oestrogen to care what you think Barry.
The lashes are for me and anyone else who enjoys the dopamine of their fluttering, whimsical rebellion. I choose to get my neurochemicals from joy and positivity rather than mining for it by being nasty and stirring up hate in other people’s comments.

Joy is an act of resistance.

PDA part 47: why won’t my PDA pupil do as they are told?

It’s can’t. Not won’t.

The level of anxiety they are experiencing means that they perceive your demand as a threat.
Here’s why and what you can do.

PDA part 46: Changing behaviour is all about the language we use.

Especially when it comes to Pathological Demand Avoidance. Elizabeth Newson , who originally described PDA often said she didn’t like the use of the word “pathological “ . ( Which begs the question; why did you call it that then?)

Since she first wrote about this in 1983 many re framed the meaning behind the letters. First to

Both of these quite simply sum up what is really going on for these children.

PDA part 47: Not all PDA behaviour is explosive. Demand avoidance can look like low level behaviours such as these. It’s important to understand that these may be the early signs before more explosive behaviour or they could be part of the high masking behaviour we see at school before a child melts down or shutdown at home.
