Tomorrow we introduce our new Academy set up as they take the field against Westcombe Park. This is the first time in the clubs 140 year history we have an academy, to build the future of our club. The boys have trained hard this pre season ready to take to the field tomorrow at 11. 🟡🔵 Our First Coach Education Day 🟡🔵

A brilliant morning at Thanet Wanderers as we held our first Coach Education Day, bringing coaches from across the club together to learn, share ideas and continue developing what we offer our players.

A huge thank you to every one of our volunteer coaches who gave up their Saturday morning to attend. 💙💛

Our club simply wouldn’t function without people volunteering their time each week. Coaching doesn’t start and finish with a training session — it’s the planning, preparation, messages, match days, courses and countless other things that happen behind the scenes. We really appreciate everything you do.

Today’s development focused on two important areas.

🧩 Supporting SEND
We explored practical strategies coaches can use to support players with additional needs. The key message was simple: inclusive coaching doesn’t always mean creating a completely different session — often, small adaptations can make a huge difference to a player’s experience.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Our FAMILY Pillar
We also explored the first of our club pillars — Family — and what that should look and feel like across Thanet Wanderers. From players and parents to coaches and volunteers, we want people to feel that they belong, are supported and are part of one club.

📋 We also launched our new Thanet Wanderers 5-Minute Coaching Session Plans, giving coaches a simple tool to help plan purposeful sessions around our club values and the Thanet Way, while still giving coaches the freedom to bring their own knowledge, personality and ideas.

This is just the start.

We want to create a culture where our coaches are supported to keep learning, share good practice and ultimately provide the best possible experience for every player who pulls on a Thanet Wanderers shirt.

🏉 CREATE AN ENVIRONMENT THEY WANT TO RETURN TO. 💙💛

Teenage rugby isn’t just competing against other sports.

It’s competing with school and exams. Jobs. Friends. Relationships. Family commitments. Driving lessons. Tiredness. And simply being a teenager.

So when a young player misses training, it doesn’t automatically mean they’ve lost interest in rugby.

At Thanet Wanderers, we want to challenge ourselves as coaches to think differently.

Our job isn’t just to get players through the gate every week.

Our job is to make them want to come back.

That means creating an environment built around our club values:

Young people have more demands on their time as they get older. There will be weeks when rugby isn’t their first priority — and that’s OK.

What matters is what happens when they walk back through our gates.

Do they feel valued?

Do they feel part of something?

Because ultimately, the experience we create today influences whether they choose rugby tomorrow.

Thanet Wanderers RUFC Summer Rugby Skills School Scores Big Success
Thanet Wanderers Rugby Union Football Club was delighted to welcome more than 40 young players to its Summer Rugby Skills School, held from 27–29 July, for three fun-filled days of learning, development and teamwork.
The event, which was open to children aged 8–11 years, provided an exciting opportunity for young players to develop their fundamental rugby skills through a variety of structured skill stations, game zones and regulated coaching activities. Throughout the three days, all sessions were delivered in line with RFU guidelines, ensuring a safe, enjoyable and inclusive environment for everyone involved.
While rugby remained the central focus, coaches introduced a range of complementary activities including rugby netball, rounders, tennis and other team-building games. These activities were carefully selected to help children understand how movement, communication, decision-making and coordination developed in other sports can positively transfer into rugby, supporting their overall progression and enjoyment of the game.
A special thank you goes to Prentis Greengrocers of Broadstairs, whose generous sponsorship provided fresh fruit each day for all participants. Their support helped promote healthy eating habits throughout the summer holidays and was greatly appreciated by players, parents and coaches alike.
Despite experiencing extreme summer weather, spirits remained high throughout the week. The event concluded on Wednesday with a fun-filled water fight, providing a memorable finish before everyone gathered for a whole-group presentation attended by parents, volunteers and supporters.
During the presentation, coaches reflected on the fantastic progress made by all participants over the three days, highlighting improvements in confidence, teamwork, technical ability and game understanding. Every child received a commemorative medal in recognition of their hard work, commitment and enthusiasm.
Three players were also presented with special awards—one each from the Under 9s, Under 10s and Under 11s age groups. These individuals were recognised not only for their outstanding improvement throughout the camp but also for consistently demonstrating the club's core pillars of Family, Skillset, Potential and Discipline.
The Summer Rugby Skills School proved to be a tremendous success, with positive feedback received from both children and parents. Thanet Wanderers RUFC would like to thank all of the coaches, volunteers, parents and sponsors whose support made the event possible.
Following the success of this year's programme, the club is pleased to confirm that the Summer Rugby Skills School will return next year. Further details, including dates and booking information, will be released after the Christmas break.
Thanet Wanderers RUFC looks forward to welcoming even more young players next summer as it continues to inspire the next generation to enjoy rugby, develop new skills and be part of the club's welcoming rugby family.
