𝗖𝗼𝗹𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝘁 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝗿𝘆!

The U16 Colts made the long journey to Newry on Saturday in what turned out to be an absolute belter of a game.

Tries from Matthew McClean and Scott McCandless in the first half were the least that was deserved from some cracking, interlinking play. Newry were also in fine form, with their out-half gluing their team together. The first half finished all square at 10–10.

With some fine words of wisdom from Jimmy Speers at half-time ringing in their ears, the boys took to the second half in buoyant form. Tries from Sam Wright and Jamie Morrison were met with two further home scores, both ably converted by their excellent out-half. This left the Toon chasing the win.

Up stepped newcomer Daniel Laverty, with some fantastic line breaks. One of which allowed him to cross over in the corner!

The Toon were able to keep Newry at bay for the final period of play, securing a thrilling 24–25 victory.

The whole team were absolutely fantastic and literally gave it their all. The coaches were absolutely delighted with the attitude and commitment shown. Every single player was Man of the Match!

Ballymoney 3rd XV v Inishowen 1st XV

On Saturday Ballymoney 3rd XV opened their league campaign with an away trip to Inishowen 1st XV.

The match was a physical affair with Inishowen taking the early initiative, scoring twice in close succession to leave the visitors trailing 12-0. During this period Ballymoney were down to 14 men after receiving a yellow card and had to work hard to ensure the game wouldn’t go out of reach.

Once the Toon men were back to the full 15, they were able to push deep into the Inishowen ‘22. After some strong carries in the forwards from Ruairi Hawthorne and Rab Newton, Ballymoney edged closer and closer to the try line. Harvey Anderson showed great pace out wide to score in the corner to give the visitors their first points of the day. In the latter stages of the first half, after significant pressure, John Gilkinson crossed the line for Ballymoney with David Hodges kicking the conversion to leave the scoreline 12-12 at Half Time.

Ballymoney looked to keep their momentum going into the second half and tested the Inishowen defence early on. After a grubber kick through into the in-goal area by David Hodges an Inishowen player was deemed to have impeded him from scoring and a penalty try was awarded leaving the scoreline 19-12 to Ballymoney.

Ballymoney were playing into a strong wind and found it difficult to get out of their own half for much of the second half. The toon men put in a strong defensive performance against repeated Inishowen carries, with Thomas Sloan and Jake White putting in some big hits. With around 5 minutes to go David Hodges slotted a penalty to put Ballymoney out of reach at 22-12. Inishowen scored in the last play of the game to leave the final score 22-19.

Team Captain Jonny Waide commented, “while we didn’t have a great start we showed great resilience to come back from two tries down and every player put in a big performance to ensure that we came away with the win. We’d like to thank Inishowen for their great hospitality and wish them all the best for the rest of the season.”

🏉𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻 💙🩵

Grace Purvis has made the journey from Ballymoney Minis and Youth Girls teams, and has now made her debut at Loughborough University as she lined up to play a friendly against Brunel University. Grace was invited to attend the University's Preseason Program and for the past 5 weeks has been living her best life. Ballymoney RFC are so proud of our Grace.
