Our Mens senior section enjoyed a training match at the Goodship today. A brilliant intra-club game with plenty of minutes for our players.

Great to see both teams getting stuck in and enjoying their rugby, followed by a BBQ for both our men’s and women’s sections.

The excitement is building for the upcoming season.

Not long now 😉

Update for all academy parents and players! As per the RFU announcement we are delaying the restart of our academy sessions to the Sunday 20th.

This is due to the recent weather causing pitches across the country to be too hard for this time of year.

If you’re a new player, hold tight, it won’t be long until things kick off. Thanks for your patience!

Meet the coaches:

Reece Courtney - Second Team lead coach.

Rugby CV:
Experienced community level player, up to L6.
Set to complete the L3 England Rugby Advanced Coaching award this season.
Previously lead coach of the third team.

Since joining the club in 2024, Reece has been a model servant for the club. He joined us after retiring from his playing career with injury but wanting to stay involved in the game, he sought a regular coaching role. He started as the coach of the third team and immediately implemented a strong playing culture. Going from a team that struggled to turn out a bare 15 on matchdays (sometimes less!) To a team that, by the end of the season was fielding squads of at least 25 players. He helped bring players back and fall in love with the game again.

Following his success with the 3s, Reece was appointed the second team coach. In his first season, the second team secured the league championship and an undefeated season. Taking our 2nd XV to Counties 2 - their highest playing level in the clubs history. Whilst the following season proved to be his biggest challenge yet, unable to maintain Counties 2 status, Reece has stuck with our second team and is embracing the challenge of rebuilding the core skills of our new, young and developing players.

Reece has stated "My fondest playing memories are with my boyhood club, Ashfield RUFC in Nottinghamshire. For many years, we had little in the way of facilities but we were a tight-knit team who enjoyed successive promotions despite our basic set up. That camaraderie, togetherness and pushing each other to be better is what i try to carry forward in my coaching. Andover, like Ashfield is a club that absolutely represents its community and always reminds me that Rugby is a game for everyone. Whether you're completely new or returning to the game, come down and give it a go. In the end, there's not many things better than chucking a ball around with friends and enjoying a beer and a laugh afterwards".

Meet the players

Conor Green - second team captain/ladies coach

Rugby CV:
Andover Youth Players.
Spent many years as a 1xv player.
Has been running the ladies teams for the last few seasons.
Now starting his first season as a 2xv captain.

If you could describe Conor in one word, that word would be clubman. He has been with the club from a young age, playing youth and colts, and since then he has had quite the time with us, spending time with all 3 adult teams, winning leagues, getting relegated, recovering from severe injuries and surgeries, dealing with all the highs and lows the game of rugby could throw at you.

With all he has been through in his playing career, he has also had a great distinguished coaching career also. At the point when he first started coaching the ladies team, they were a touch only squad. But since then Conor and the rest of his team have helped progress the squad, eventually landing a full contact team, as well as allowing the touch team to flourish.

And now he is taking on a new challenge of captaining the second team.

About his time at the club, Conor has said ‘Andover is more than a club, it is a community that has brought me so much joy over the years. Whether playing, coaching or refereeing, I always look forward to pulling on that stag.’

Meet the people.

Andy Waite - Director of Rugby.

Rugby CV:
Over 30 years in coaching for Andover.
Around 15 years as DoR.
Former high level player.
Had an over 40 years playing career.
Been with Andover since the early 90s.

Andy joined us at Andover RFC before most of our current players were even born, and in that time there is not much he hasn’t seen or done.

He started his coaching journey with his oldest son’s youth team and took many of them through to become senior first, second and third team players, and then he went on to do the same thing with his youngest son’s youth team which also produced multiple first second and third team players for the club.

When Andy took over the role of DoR, the club was teetering at the bottom of level 9. But through many years of hard work and leadership, under his oversight, the club has reached the highest levels in our history. The 1s made it to level 6 and the 2s made it to level 9 (the same level the 1s were when he took over). And in that time he was able to see all four of his sons come into the senior setup and play first team rugby together.

About his time at the club, Andy says: ‘After a lot of years in the game, there is nothing that I am more proud of than what we have achieved here at Andover. Of course, we have had our ups and downs - who doesn’t - but we are a true community club in a very healthy and strong place at the moment. We have a superb coaching team and a dedicated and talented group of players across all our squads. It’s fantastic to watch them work together to do the very best we can. We’re really looking forward to the new season.’

Well done everyone that came out to support Andover carnival!

Our float team did an amazing job showcasing our club within our community.

It looked awesome and there were smiles for miles.

Meet the player

CJ Feirn - 1xv Captain.

Rugby CV.
Andover RFC player since youth.
Capped Hampshire senior player.
Captain of Hampshire u20s.

CJ has been an Andover player since joining in youth when he moved over from the West Country, and since that point you could say he has been a stand out player for the club. He made his debut for the first team at age 17 and since and has been one of the first names on the team sheet ever since.

CJ has had quite the accomplished Rugby career already for someone who is only 24, having represented Hampshire seniors for 2 seasons (including winning man of the match in one of their recent games) and captaining the Hampshire u20s, and now he is going into his second season as Andover RFC 1xv captain.

In his own words CJ says “I love to play for Andover, I have so many great friends here and it is a fun place to play. The club offers top notch coaching and a welcoming brotherhood to be a part of.”

Meet the coaches!

Anthony Woodthorpe - Men’s senior coach

Rugby CV:
International & Premiership referee
Consultant at Ealing Trailfinders
High-level player before retirement

Anthony has been with the club for around two years, and in that time, he has brought great leadership and structure to the club. Due to his work at the highest level of rugby in many different forms, he has been able to translate the professional game to the amateur level, leading to the adult men progressing their game leaps and bounds during his tenure at the club.

If you fancy coming along and being coached by Anthony, here is his advice: “Just to start, just to try it. Okay, the biggest thing is just turning up and having your first session, and then from there, you can figure out what you like and what you don’t like, and hopefully, the rugby club is a place that you will thrive and just, enjoy as from a community point of view, and from a sporting point of view.”

Mens senior training takes place Tuesdays and Thursdays 7:15pm start. We are currently training at Charlton whilst the pitch work is being done.
Come join us, all levels welcome.
