Red dot design awards
A design classic

Designed from the ground up in three-dimensional CAD, refined through four-dimensional cnc routing, the CNC aluminium reel seat was submitted to the Red Dot Design Award — a design classic, not just a component. Light, strong, and precision-machined: it never loosens, never squeaks, never rattles. Effortless to operate. When form and function align, you get a reel seat you never knew you needed.

20 years of casting instruction. The latest Japanese carbon technology. One rod.

Built around Toray’s latest high-modulus carbon fibre, the Sunray Signature drives tight, powerful loops and serious distance — with none of the stiffness that usually comes with it. The blank loads deep and recovers fast, putting power into the line, not your arm. It feels weightless, casts like nothing can stop it.

The finest fly rod our AAPGAI advanced instructor / designer Tom has ever made. His signature.

The man behind Finner and Sunray

Tom, founder of Finner and Sunray Fly Fish, is an Advanced member of AAPGAI. This footage is 16 years old — a custom 15ft Burkheimer 8-weight (built for Tom in an 8-weight that didn’t exist at the time) paired with a 63ft Masters Spey line he welded by hand from 16 different lines. That homemade line is how Sunray began, and it’s the same obsession behind the new Masters Spey range: zero-stretch Kevlar core, 11 years in development.

His style — drawn from Andrew Toft’s stop-and-block technique — is constant tension, no wiggles, using the double-handed rod as a class-three lever stopped at peak velocity for maximum turnover with minimum effort. In the years since, Tom has cast almost daily, both hands, across the world’s salmonid waters, and that rod-and-line control now runs through nearly two decades of his tackle design.

Shaped by some of the top casters and instructors in the world: Illtyd Griffiths, Karl Humphries, Paul Arden, Glyn Freeman, Jim Fearn, Andrew Toft, Ian Fairgrieve and David Moore.

The standard: perfect ex*****on on one of the hardest rod-and-line combinations to control — right hand and left, no concessions.

Four years in the making. One simple component. Countless hours of refinement.

Introducing the new Sunray Fly Reel Seat — engineered from the ground up and built to be a key part of our new ultra-fast action rods, launching this October.

Sometimes the smallest details take the longest to get right.
