The man behind Finner and Sunray
Tom, founder of Finner and Sunray Fly Fish, is an Advanced member of AAPGAI. This footage is 16 years old — a custom 15ft Burkheimer 8-weight (built for Tom in an 8-weight that didn’t exist at the time) paired with a 63ft Masters Spey line he welded by hand from 16 different lines. That homemade line is how Sunray began, and it’s the same obsession behind the new Masters Spey range: zero-stretch Kevlar core, 11 years in development.
His style — drawn from Andrew Toft’s stop-and-block technique — is constant tension, no wiggles, using the double-handed rod as a class-three lever stopped at peak velocity for maximum turnover with minimum effort. In the years since, Tom has cast almost daily, both hands, across the world’s salmonid waters, and that rod-and-line control now runs through nearly two decades of his tackle design.
Shaped by some of the top casters and instructors in the world: Illtyd Griffiths, Karl Humphries, Paul Arden, Glyn Freeman, Jim Fearn, Andrew Toft, Ian Fairgrieve and David Moore.
The standard: perfect ex*****on on one of the hardest rod-and-line combinations to control — right hand and left, no concessions.
