FUEL FRIDAY Are you getting enough FIBRE?

We hear a lot about protein — and rightly so — but there's another part of our diet that deserves some attention.

Fibre.

Fibre helps keep our digestive system healthy, supports regular bowel movements, helps with blood-sugar control, can help lower cholesterol and feeds the beneficial bacteria living in our gut. And here's the interesting part: most of us probably don't need another supplement to get it.

Think real food:
Oats
Berries
Apples and pears
Beans and lentils
Vegetables
Whole grains
Nuts and seeds

For adults, a useful target is roughly 25–38 grams of fibre per day, depending on age and s*x. One important tip: increase fibre gradually and make sure you're drinking enough water. Going from very little fibre to huge amounts overnight isn't going to make your digestive system particularly happy! So this Fuel Friday, don't just ask: “Did I get enough protein today?” Ask: “Did I get enough fibre too?”

Fuel Friday — because what we eat matters just as much as how we train.

TRAINING THURSDAY

Are you training your BACK? We spend a lot of time talking about legs, glutes, arms and abs but having a strong back is incredibly important.

Today I'm doing a seated cable row, one of my favourite exercises for developing the muscles of the upper and mid-back. Don't just pull the weight.

Think about drawing your elbows back and bringing your shoulder blades towards each other, while keeping your torso controlled. If you're rocking backwards and forwards to move the weight, chances are the weight is too heavy.

A strong back helps support good posture, shoulder function and everyday pulling strength and it creates that lovely strong upper-body shape too.

Technique first. Weight second. Progression third.

Because there's a difference between simply doing an exercise and actually training the muscles you're trying to train.

Training Thursday — train with purpose.

WELLNESS WEDNESDAY

Did you know that exercise isn't only training your body? We often start exercising because we want to lose weight, get stronger or improve our fitness. But one of the benefits we sometimes overlook is what regular exercise can do for our mental wellbeing. Physical activity can help reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, improve mood and sleep, and give us something incredibly valuable — a sense of achievement. And it doesn't have to be an exhausting workout.

Lift some weights.
Go for a walk.
Ride your bike.
Take a class.
Move your body in a way you enjoy. Some days you train because you're motivated. Other days, you might walk into the gym feeling overwhelmed and walk out feeling just a little bit better. That counts too.

At PL Fitness, we believe health is about far more than what you weigh or what you see in the mirror.

Strong body. Healthy mind.

Wellness Wednesday — looking after the whole you.

BONEFACT TUESDAY - Did you know?

For an older adult, a fall isn't always “just a fall.”

As we age, particularly if bone density has declined, a seemingly simple fall can result in a hip fracture.
And the consequences can be significant.
A hip fracture can mean surgery, hospitalization, loss of mobility and a long rehabilitation. Some people never regain the same level of independence they had before their fracture.

This is why I am so passionate about strength training as we get older. We aren't just training muscles.

We're training stronger bones, better balance, stronger legs and the ability to react when we stumble. As a BoneFit-trained coach, this is something I take very seriously. Strength training isn't simply about how you look. It's about protecting your independence.

BoneFact Tuesday — because strong bones matter at every age.

WOMEN’S HEALTH WEDNESDAY

Can’t fasten your bra without shoulder pain?

Struggling to put on a jacket, reach into the back seat or lift your arm above your head?

It might not be “just getting older.”

Frozen shoulder most commonly develops between the ages of 40 and 60—and it affects women more often than men.

It is also increasingly being recognized during perimenopause and menopause. Researchers are still studying the hormonal connection, but changes in estrogen may affect inflammation and the tissues surrounding our joints.

The shoulder can gradually become painful and so stiff that even simple daily movements feel impossible.

Women are often told to tolerate unexplained aches and stiffness. Don’t ignore a shoulder that is becoming progressively more painful or losing movement.

Your body isn’t being dramatic. It may be telling you something.

BONE FACT TUESDAY

Did you know that your muscles help strengthen your bones?

When you lift weights, your muscles contract and pull on your bones through the tendons. Your bones sense this mechanical load, and specialized cells called osteocytes signal the body to maintain and build stronger bone tissue.

This is why we need to lift weights that are genuinely challenging—not weights we could repeat endlessly without effort.

As your strength improves, the resistance must gradually increase so your muscles and bones continue receiving a reason to adapt.

Strong muscles don’t just shape your body. They help protect and strengthen the framework underneath it.

Lift safely. Lift progressively. Lift for your future.

MOTIVATIONAL MONDAY

Did you know that you can begin building measurable muscle and reducing visceral fat in as little as 8–12 weeks?

The key is consistency:
• Improve the quality of your diet
• Complete at least 30 minutes of purposeful activity, five days per week
• Include strength training at least twice per week
• Gradually challenge your muscles as you become stronger

You may start feeling stronger and more energetic before you see a major physical change. Don’t give up because results aren’t immediate. Give your body time to respond to the work you’re doing. Small, consistent choices create measurable change.

Ask me how!

SPOTLIGHT SATURDAY — MEET DULCIE

How well do you actually know your trainer? Here are a few things you might not know about me…

I grew up in Zululand, South Africa, before moving to Canada. I once worked as Personal Assistant to the Zulu King in Zululand. Definitely not the usual route into personal training!
I compete in triathlons — because apparently choosing just one sport would have been far too sensible.

yes… burpees are genuinely one of my favourite exercises. I'm aware this may explain quite a lot about my classes.

At 57, I'm still setting myself new challenges, learning, competing and finding out what my body is capable of.

Life before PL Fitness was certainly interesting… and there are a LOT more stories where those came from!
