The Block Wangoom. Asbestos is a dirty word.

Week four.

The plan to patch all the holes and wack on some paint changed when it turned out all the walls were asbestos sheets and the ceiling needed replacing 🙁. With the advice that ‘you should have knocked the whole building down and started again’ ringing in our ears, we contacted Murrihy Demolitions and got them to remove all the walls and ceiling.

It was certainly fortunate that Goomers of the past never screwed or nailed anything into the wall!

We also discovered parts of the floor needed replacing. Apparently, we were lucky the beer fridge hadn’t fallen through the floor!

We can now go for a rustic decor with walls displaying an aged metal look and a ceiling of loose fitting 1980’s insulation.

We’ve gone too far down the rabbit hole to stop, so we’ll take the positives and reinforce the floor to make sure the beer fridge finds a safe a happy space to carry out its important role in the future of our club 😊.

The Block Wangoom. Demo Day.

Week three.

With plans drawn up and money sourced, it’s Demo Day. When people are asked to bring a sledgehammer, plenty of volunteers turn up! Perhaps when we are looking for canteen volunteers, we need to say “please bring a sledgehammer and hard hat”

First thing is to get everything off the walls and put it on the deck in the hope someone steals most of it, so we don’t have to put it back. Then smash up the kitchen, sweep up the dead mice and burn it all.

With the room cleared, next step is to patch all the holes in the wall and paint.

A huge thankyou to all that turned up to help clear out the room 😊

Volunteer painters wanted. Bring your own sledgehammer 😊

The Block Wangoom. Show me the money.

Week two.

Ok, now we need to get some funding ☹. It is estimated the job will cost around $55,000. We contacted Albo to see if he could throw some dollars our way, but he wanted us to give him some money instead. Next stop Jacinta Allen. Not a CFMEU site and not in Melbourne so no money from them. So, we are going to have to look locally.

First stop; The Trigg Foundation. Living across the road from the cricket ground, the three Trigg sisters and their brother Cyrill ran a dairy farm. None ever got married and on the death of the last sister, Mavis, in 2019, a foundation was set up to support communities in Western Victoria. Thanks to the Trigg family, $10,000 has been given to us for this project. The Brody Foundation, set up by Wangoom’s own Lindsay and Bill Brody have contributed $10,000 and the Lane Foundation have contributed $5,000. A huge thanks to these local foundations.

Cricket Victoria in partnership with CitiPower offered canteen grants and have generously allocated $5,000 to the project.

The facility is owned by The Moyne Shire (Previously the Warrnambool Shire Council) after it was gifted to them by the Wangoom Community in the early 1980’s. Through the Community Assistance Fund which is a 1:1 grant, $7500 has bee allocated to this project. The Wangoom Cricket Club has committed to match this, so we have $45,000. The Wangoom Recreational Reserve Committee and The Warrnambool Cycling Club, who are a tenant of the facility, will chuck in some cash, so we reckon we have enough to get started.

Next step, Demo Day.

The Block Wangoom.

‘We have a problem!’

Week one.

Over the next ten weeks, the Wangoom Cricket Club will be undergoing a major renovation to its clubrooms.

The current room is a 1950’s portable classroom shifted on to the site in the early 1990’s. Apparently it was located at the Old Warrnambool High School maybe to house the delinquents who came down from Warrnambool North Tech when they decided they didn’t want to learn a trade. Should have stayed at North Tech as those that did now drive RAM Utes around town to check on their 10 rental properties 😊.

The first thing you need to do in fixing a problem, is identifying you have a problem. The cricket club now has four teams, does around 40 meals on a Thursday and hosts Saturday games from October to March. With the club’s plan to continue as a standalone club, continuous improvement is part of its strategic plan, and a clubroom upgrade is part of that plan.

Each week we will give our members, supporters, players and the community an update as to where we are at. As previously mentioned, you need to identify you have a problem, and these pictures confirm we do 😊.
