Regional Queensland FC is proud to announce the appointment of former Matilda Tammie Thornton as our Cairns & Far North Queensland Regional Ambassador.
From the football fields of Cairns to representing Australia on the international stage, Tammie Thornton's journey is a testament to the incredible talent that continues to emerge from regional Queensland.
Born and raised in Cairns, Tammie began her football journey in Far North Queensland before progressing through the Queensland Academy of Sport, where her talent and determination earned her selection for the Australian Women's National Team. She went on to represent the Matildas on 19 occasions, becoming one of the pioneering players who helped shape the future of women's football in Australia.
Her football career took her across the globe. After developing through Queensland's elite pathway, Tammie played collegiate football in the United States before continuing her professional career in England, including a stint with Chelsea FC. As part of one of the earliest generations of Matildas, she helped pave the way for the success and recognition that Australian women's football enjoys today.
Despite competing on some of the world's biggest stages, Tammie has never forgotten where her journey began. Her story continues to inspire young footballers across Far North Queensland, proving that players from regional communities can achieve success at the very highest level.
Today, Tammie remains deeply connected to the game through coaching, athlete development and mentoring aspiring footballers throughout Far North Queensland. Combining her experience as a former international footballer, educator and strength and conditioning coach, she is passionate about helping young athletes maximise their potential both on and off the field while fostering a lifelong love of the game.
As Regional Queensland FC's inaugural Cairns & Far North Queensland Regional Ambassador, Tammie will play an integral role in strengthening football pathways throughout the region, identifying and nurturing emerging talent, and ensuring young players from Far North Queensland have genuine opportunities to pursue their football dreams without losing sight of their regional roots.
Her appointment reflects Regional Queensland FC's vision of connecting regional communities, celebrating local football heroes and building clear pathways that allow the next generation to follow in the footsteps of pioneers like Tammie.
A former Matilda, trailblazer and proud Far North Queenslander, Tammie Thornton embodies everything Regional Queensland FC stands for. We are honoured to welcome her to the Regional Queensland FC family and look forward to working together to inspire the next generation of footballers across the Far North.
