Fun Fact Friday:
The first women’s water polo players (back in 1906!) trained in heavy wool swimsuits that soaked up water like a sponge — adding up to 4kg mid‑game.
Imagine wrestling for position while wearing a soggy jumper.

In 1906, long before women could vote in many countries, a group of trailblazing Dutch athletes played what is widely considered the first recorded women’s water polo match.
It happened in the Netherlands, where women’s aquatic sports were surprisingly progressive for the era.

FunFit Ladies — Session 5 Recap (Uni Forum Pool)

Another brilliant Wednesday night with the Uni Forum crew — and tonight was all about moving the body with purpose, speed, and control.

The focus skill was the pendulum technique, one of the most important movement patterns in water polo. The ladies worked on shifting backwards, forwards, and side‑to‑side with efficiency, learning how to let the body — not the arms — do the heavy lifting.

Once this technique becomes natural, everything in the game becomes easier: positioning, defending, attacking, and staying balanced under pressure.

The energy was classic FunFit:
• Plenty of determination
• Plenty of laughs
• And plenty of “oh wow, that actually works!” moments

Session 5 done — and the confidence in the water is growing every week.

FunFit Ladies – Session 4 Recap (Charlestown Pool)

What a glorious day at Charlestown — not a cloud in the sky, sunshine bouncing off the water, and the perfect backdrop for a session built on strength and skill.

Tonight we kept building on our theme of leg strength, the true engine of water polo. Swimming fitness gets you around the pool, but leg fitness keeps you high, stable, and in control. It’s the difference between surviving a play and executing one.

From there we shifted into learning two key shooting styles:
• Push shot — quick, controlled, ideal when you need to release under pressure.
• T‑shot — using lift, shape, and timing to create accuracy even when chased.

Both shots shine when the defence is right on your back. That’s why tonight’s focus wasn’t just on the arm — it was on the body position that makes these shots possible.

To pull them off cleanly, you need:
• Hips up
• Strong, horizontal body/legs
• A streamlined body line
• Balance before power
The group did an awesome job connecting the leg work to the shooting technique — staying high, staying stable, and learning how to finish even under pressure.

A sunny, skill‑packed session with plenty of growth and confidence in the water.
Bring on Session 5.

FUNFIT WATER POLO — REPRESENTED AROUND THE WORLD 🌍

This season we’ve loved seeing our community grow — from our mixed sessions at Lambton to the friendships that have formed in and out of the pool.

Two of our favourite UK lads, Riley and Callum, are currently off on a month‑long adventure, and even while travelling they’ve been sending through updates from every stop. And yes — they’re proudly repping FunFit Water Polo along the way.

Both boys are from the United Kingdom and work at Lambton Pool as swim school managers, duty managers and lifeguards. Last season they jumped straight into our mixed session with the same energy they bring to work: supportive, competitive, and always up for a laugh.

We love seeing our FunFit family out in the world — whether they’re in the pool, on deck, or halfway across the globe.
Once you’re part of this crew, you carry it with you 💙

Safe travels, lads — keep the updates coming.

Today, our page received a comment describing our program as “boring” and referring to our community as “a bunch of arrogant feminists.”
While we do not typically engage with negative commentary, it is important to reaffirm who we are and what we stand for.

Our program is built on community strength, women supporting women, and a commitment to positive sporting culture. These values guide every session, every interaction, and every initiative we deliver.

One negative comment does not reflect the reality of our program, nor does it diminish the dedication, enthusiasm and progress of the women who participate. We remain focused on providing a safe, supportive and high‑quality water polo experience for all.

Thank you to our athletes, supporters and partner organisations for continuing to uphold the spirit of FunFit Water Polo.

FunFit Ladies – Session 4 Recap (UNI Forum Pool)

Tonight was all about leg fitness and strength, the foundation of everything we do in water polo. The ladies put in such solid work — powering through a horizontal and vertical drill, building stability, and finding that strong, balanced body position that makes every skill easier.
From there we moved into push shots and T‑shots, using that leg power to create lift, balance, and accuracy.

Why does leg strength matter so much in water polo?
Because it’s the engine of the sport. Strong legs help players stay high in the water, move quickly, defend without sinking, and shoot with real power. It’s the difference between surviving a game and owning it.

The second‑half game was a beauty — goal for goal, totally even, and full of smart teamwork. The ladies used their space brilliantly, communicated well, and created scoring opportunities through movement rather than rushing. It was competitive, fun, and exactly the kind of water polo we love to see.

A fantastic session with a fantastic crew.
Bring on next week.

FUNFIT LADIES WATER POLO — SESSION 3 (CHARLESTOWN)

What a stunning day at Charlestown Pool. Sunshine, smiles, and strong focus from the ladies in the water.

Today’s session revisited one of the most important fundamentals in water polo:
Hips Up - staying high in the water to stay balanced, powerful, and ready to move. The group really locked in on why this position matters for almost every moment of the game.

We also took a deeper dive into the ‘Keep‑Away’ drill, which became the highlight of the session.
The goal: stay in control and maintain possession when in an offensive position.
The ladies applied it beautifully in both passing and shooting drills, connecting it back to our golden rule;
BBB ‘Body Before Ball’. The idea is to make every movement purposeful and every play confident.

It was a day full of learning, laughter, and sunshine.
The perfect mix for FunFit Ladies Water Polo.

Bring on next week! ☀️💙

FUNFIT LADIES WATER POLO — SESSION 3 (UNI FORUM)💙
Another great night with the Wednesday crew. Strong energy, lots of learning, and plenty of those classic FunFit laughs.

Tonight’s big focus was why we get our hips up in water polo.
Keeping the hips high is one of the most important fundamentals in the sport. It keeps you balanced, powerful, and ready to move in any direction. The group really locked in on how this position should be held for about 90% of the game, and the improvement across the session was so clear.

We also worked through the ‘Keep‑Away’ drill, using it to build smart decision‑making under pressure. The ladies applied it beautifully in both passing and shooting scenarios, learning how to protect the ball, create space, and stay composed even when defenders close in.

Such a fun, switched‑on session.

Can’t wait to build on it next week.
