Leis was chatting to Florence about Iaido and how she ended up giving it a go after 9 years of Aikido.

She said when she first started, she just thought it looked really cool.

Which we completely get 😂 I mean it’s a sword right!

And you don’t need years of martial arts experience to give Iaido a go either. You can start exactly where you are.

But now, after spending more time with it, Florence has realised how much it actually calms her mind, especially at the end of the day.

I love that.

You never really know what a practice is going to give you when you first start. Sometimes you just think, “Yep, that looks cool. I’ll give it a go.”

And then you find there’s a whole lot more to it.

Have a listen to Florence talk about what Iaido has become for her 🐺

𝗣𝗘𝗢𝗣𝗟𝗘 𝗛𝗘𝗟𝗣𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗣𝗘𝗢𝗣𝗟𝗘.

We’ve always believed a dojo should be a place where people can begin.

Sometimes someone just needs a place to go.
Something positive to work towards.
A good group of people around them.

Over the years, we’ve quietly helped people into the dojo when circumstances made it difficult for them to get here themselves.

We want to keep doing that.

Our Giving Back initiative creates opportunities for people in our local community to access the dojo when they might not otherwise be able to.

Someone who might be going through a difficult period.
Someone who’s lost a little confidence or connection.
Someone who simply needs a positive place to belong.

If you know someone who could genuinely benefit from being part of Newcastle Aikido, you can nominate them.

You can also contribute towards helping someone access the dojo, whether you know who they are or not.

Because sometimes opening the door is all it takes to help someone find their way forward.

People helping people.

Real strength doesn’t start in the shoulders.

This isn’t a technique, just a simple exercise of how we learn to use strength from the hara and hips, connecting the whole body behind the movement.

Grounded. Connected. Powerful.

Happy Father’s Day to the Dojo Dads.

The ones who show up.
Put in the work.
Keep turning up when it would be easier not to.
And occasionally pretend they weren’t sore getting out of bed this morning.

We’re lucky to have you on the tatami

Happy Father’s Day, Dads 🙏🏻

A Day in the Dojo with Leis

A Saturday of a super fun kids class, intermediate with Sensei Pierre, inductions and welcoming 15 new people into BECOME.

There was plenty happening behind the scenes too people pitching in, helping out and sharing what they have.

A massive thank you to our senior students for making our new people feel so welcome.

And to our 15 new BECOME crew thank you for being brave enough to walk through the doors and give something new a go. That first step takes courage.

Feeling very lucky to be surrounded by such good people. ❤️

Well, that seems to have worked 👀

GOODBYE FOR NOW FOR OUR TAYLOR ❤️

Last night was Taylor’s last class at the dojo.

She’s off to New Zealand to start her dream job as a firefighter, and we couldn’t be happier or prouder of her! 🔥

Taylor has been such a huge part of our dojo family, from teaching our kids classes, to being an uchideshi live in student. She’s been loud, cheeky, hilarious and, most importantly, has a massive heart.

She’s brought so much to our kids, our community and all of us, and she’s definitely going to be missed.

We know this isn’t really goodbye though. She’s family, and we know she’ll still be very much part of our lives, even from across the ditch.

Go smash it, Tay! You are so loved and we’re so proud of you ❤️

Show Taylor some love in the comments and wish her well on this next adventure!

And who knows… watch out for a new dojo in New Zealand 😉

ONLY 10 PLACES LEFT 🤸

Winter sport is winding down.
Maybe it’s time for something new.

Our 8-16 year old Aikido program is about more than learning martial arts.

It’s a place to make friends, build strength, find discipline and grow self-confidence while learning practical strategies to handle difficult situations, including bullying.

A great group of kids and teens and a place for kids to grow.

Only 10 places remain.

If you’ve been thinking about getting them started, now’s the time.

DM KIDS to find out more.
