MGRC hosts a number of thoroughbred races each year, including The Scott Group of Companies Gold Cup.

With a long and proud history, the Mount Gambier Racing Club is the largest race club in the Limestone Coast of South Australia and is a full time Training Centre. The club holds approx. 12 thoroughbred race meetings a season, including the signature event being the Scott Group of Companies Mount Gambier Gold Cup held in late March each year. Other major race days include the Prostate & Breast Cancer race day which raises funds for local charities held in September each year and the Christmas Twilight Races held in early December each year. We also boast a large function centre ideal for conferences, weddings & parties.

𝑷𝒓𝒊𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈, 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒊𝒏𝒗𝒐𝒍𝒗𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒅𝒊𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒉𝒐𝒓𝒔𝒆𝒔? I didn't come from a horsey family, but I learnt to ride at nine and went to Pony Club. At 15, I became an apprentice jockey in NZ and had 207 rides before weight became an issue that forced me out of race riding. I moved to Australia at 19, worked on the Gold Coast as a stable hand and track work rider for Allan Bailey, then moved to Melbourne and worked for Mike Moroney. I learnt a lot during that time about training and general horsemanship; Mike was so good to work for. I met Rebecca at Flemington, and it was love at first sight, and then I moved to Mount Gambier.

Getting to know each individual horse, as each has their own personality, and then trying to work each horse out. Watching the development of each horse.

My first race meeting at Mount Gambier in 2019, where I had two winners in one day.

𝘿𝙤 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙛𝙚𝙧 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙮𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙤𝙧 𝙨𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙨? Either.

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙝𝙤𝙧𝙨𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙝𝙖𝙨 𝙝𝙖𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙞𝙜𝙜𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙩 𝙤𝙣 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙬𝙝𝙮? Solaazem. He was very difficult to handle when I first got him. He ended up winning four races, and the change in him from when we first got him was amazing. He is now retired at home.

Be patient. Get to know the horse to learn their quirks, no one horse is the same. If you want to have an interest outside of normal life, being part of country racing is great fun.
