The Southern 80 is a ski race that occurs on the Murray river at Echuca / Moama.

Today our committee were at the Elmore Jetboats assisting the safety crews on the track. Thanks to the Elmore Events Centre, Victoria for having us.

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Andrew Davis, a competitor in the Southern 80 since 1987.

The Moama Water Sports Club committee offers its deepest condolences to the Davis family and our ski racing family.

Andrew was one of the original nominees for the Southern 80 Hall of Fame. He competed in our events from 1987 in his boats Temper, Tempered and Frantic, and also had a run for a couple of years in Strictly Business. Over the years he raced in the 8 Litre classes (Social and Expert), Unlimited Inboard, Senior Social, Presidents Invitational, Veterans and Disabled.

What Andrew loved most about the Southern 80 was the family and friends he met along the journey. He described it as the most alluring and hardest race on the calendar.

He will be sadly missed. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this very sad time.

Scrutineering bookings are now closed for this Saturday. To those that have booked and are attending, could you please make sure you have all your equipment and paperwork up to date, including proof of registration, engine sealing certificates, crack test reports etc. V drive boats please have your jackshaft cover slid back ready for inspection. Thankyou for your cooperation.

🚤 Are you ready to get back on the water and go racing again?

Ski Racing Australia has emailed members (those who were current when racing stopped) with your membership details. Please read it and get yourself organised.

Competitors have also been sent links to the items that need to be completed, such as boat scrutineering, driver and observer, and skier equipment checks. The links can be found here: https://skiracing.com.au/membership/

To help you get organised, there's a scrutineering day:
🔧 SCRUTINEERING DAY: Saturday 3 October, 8am to 3pm
Two venues to choose from:
📍 MWSC Office, 10 Despatch St, Echuca. Book with Neil Donald: 0428 505 822. MWSC will be providing a sausage sizzle, with soft drinks available for purchase.
📍 Race Marine, 10B Harwood Crt, Chelsea Heights. Book with Simon Isherwood: 0412 038 789
⚠️ Bookings are essential and must be made by Wednesday 30 September 2026.
Please note that skier wetsuit flotation testing will not be available on this day.

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Noel Griffin, driver of boats: Blazen, Burnin, Little Loose, Cut Loose, Special Edition and others.

Although the Southern 80 outright trophy eluded Noel, he loved visiting Echuca / Moama and the Murray River. He won the Barrie Beehag outright trophy in 2009.

Noel contributed so much to our sport of water ski racing, in his role of Chairman of Ski Racing Australia in the 2010’s, and he supported events and races across the country by attending with his team.

Our thoughts are with his wife Judy & family, extended family and the ski racing community at this time.
