A Historic Moment for Australian BJJ 🇦🇺🥋

Today, I want to take a moment to honour my friend, mentor, and one of the true pioneers of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Australia — Professor John Will, who has just been awarded his 7th Degree Coral Belt by Professor Rigan Machado.

This is more than just a belt. It’s a symbol of 39 years of relentless dedication, 30,000+ classes taught, and a lifetime spent shaping the art and those of us lucky enough to learn from him. John has always said, “The belt is only the odometer — it won’t do the training for us.” And yet, few have travelled as far or given as much back to the journey as he has.

John’s humility, even in this moment, speaks volumes. He tried to delay the promotion. He tipped his hat to his peers. And he reminded us all that BJJ is not just a sport or a self-defence system — it’s an art that defines us.

To be the first Australian to receive a Coral Belt is a monumental achievement. But to do so while remaining a student at heart — still discovering new insights every week — is what truly sets John apart.

To all my teammates and Redback BJJ students: this is a moment to reflect on what’s possible when you commit to the path. Let’s celebrate John’s legacy by continuing to show up, train hard, and pass on the knowledge — just as he has done for decades.

Congratulations, Professor. You’ve made history. And we’re all better for it.

Am I Progressing in BJJ? 🤔

It’s a question every practitioner asks at some point. Progress in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu isn’t always obvious because everyone around you is improving too. But if you’re consistently training, drilling techniques, and rolling with intention—you are progressing.

Your training partners see your growth even when you don’t. Sometimes, it's the small improvements that make all the difference—like learning to turtle and stand back up, preventing difficult side control situations. Sure, there’s a training cost—months of practice, adjustments, and getting caught in new ways—but over time, you eliminate vulnerabilities and become harder to deal with.

A beginner has many attack surfaces, easily exploited by experienced partners. But with time, they learn to tighten defenses and reduce openings. Sometimes, progression plateaus, and that’s where deliberate analysis, coach feedback, and self-reflection help unlock the next level.

Don’t make excuses like “I’m too old” or “I’m not flexible enough”—adapt and find a way. Moves don’t need to be executed with 100% textbook perfection to be effective. Some of the most innovative techniques come from students with physical limitations, finding ways to make techniques work for their body type.

Coaches, pay attention. There’s so much to learn from watching students of all abilities figure things out. Progress isn’t always flashy—it’s in the details, the adjustments, and the moments where things start to click.

🥋 Get Your Head in the Fight – Literally!
We’ve all heard the phrase "Get your head in the fight." It’s about mental focus, awareness, and staying dialed in—but in BJJ and wrestling, it’s just as crucial physically.

Your head is a frame, just like your arms. It creates defensive depth, stabilizes your stance, and controls your opponent’s movement. When positioned correctly—slightly forward and lower than your opponent—your head becomes a powerful tool for balance, pressure, and control.

🔥 Try this drill:
1️⃣ Stand tall with no forward head position. Have your training partner attempt a single or double-leg takedown—you’ll feel vulnerable.
2️⃣ Now, reset with your head forward and low, acting as a barrier. Your partner will find it significantly harder to get in on your legs.

✅ Your head naturally fits into the pocket between your opponent’s jawline and neck.
✅ Offsetting your head lets you push, off-balance, and dictate their reaction.
✅ Depending on how they respond—backing up, pushing in, or resisting—you can set up various takedowns.

The Power of Deliberate Training

Deliberate training is the key to athletic success. It’s not always fun, and it’s certainly not easy, but it’s what hones technique, pushes you past your limits, and accelerates real progress. Just 15-20 minutes of focused, deliberate training should leave you exhausted—not from physical effort, but from the intense concentration it demands.

So, what is deliberate training? It’s structured, intentional skill refinement. Let’s say you’re learning a new takedown—you don’t just drill it mindlessly. Instead, you break it into key components, master each step, and then piece it together until it flows seamlessly.

When done right, deliberate training looks effortless. Think of LeBron James’ ball-handling skills—absolute mastery. Or Gordon Ryan executing techniques in competition with the same precision as in his instructional videos. That’s the result of meticulous, purposeful training.
