Sometimes love is simply staying beside someone.
Our beautiful golden retriever, Faith, had just come home after an operation when my husband, Chris, lay down beside her.
He wasn’t trying to fix anything. He was simply there, loving her, soothing her and letting her know she wasn’t alone.
Faith has done the same for us many times.
She always acknowledges our presence. She greets us as though seeing us is the best part of her day. When one of us is upset, she gently comes alongside and places a paw on our leg.
Now she needs us, and we are beside her.
Looking at this photo made me wonder how different our families might feel if we offered more of this to one another.
If we looked up when someone entered the room.
If we greeted the people we love in a way that showed them we were glad they were there.
If we noticed when someone was struggling and came alongside them, not always with advice or answers, but with our presence.
Sometimes, when people feel hurt or afraid, they protect themselves by withdrawing, criticising or pushing others away.
Protection can look like disconnection, even when connection is what we most need.
We cannot guarantee that the love, kindness or compassion we offer will always be returned. Love is not a transaction.
But we can choose the presence we bring.
Sometimes that presence simply says:
I see you. I’m here. You matter to me.
Faith has eight weeks of rehabilitation ahead of her. Hopefully, before too long, we’ll be walking together again in the early morning under the stars, appreciating that beautiful, simple time we share. 🤍
