I’m Lex Strauss, owner and professional hunter at Lex Strauss Hunting Safaris, with dangerous-game hunting experience in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana. From planning your trip to stepping onto that first buffalo track, you’ll deal directly with me.

Solo hunters receive one-to-one guidance from me. Groups of up to four hunters are welcome: I guide up to two, with another experienced professional hunter guiding the additional hunters.

Last week I was able to take a Non Trophy Elephant bull too. I was using my Verney Carron in .577 using Barnes solids at 2050 FPS.

My first shot was too low and to the left and second shot was perfect to put the bull down as quick as possible.

Pe*******on was around 40inches deep which I think is impressive for such a large yet slow caliber.

Botswana makes you earn your memories. Long, hot days. Hours on dusty tracks searching for fresh sign. Approaching elephants on foot, only to lower the ri**es and walk away when the bull wasn’t right.

Those moments were as much a part of this safari as the successful hunts.

Matt completed his Dangerous 7 with a beautiful leopard—a milestone made even more special by the effort behind it. He also took a magnificent old Cape buffalo and two impressive trophy elephant bulls. Sharing those experiences with him is something I’ll always treasure.

Amy and I each took a non-trophy elephant. We were patient and selective throughout, looking for older bulls with smaller tusks and passing up younger animals. Standing close to a wild elephant leaves you with an enormous respect for its presence, and taking one carries a responsibility that extends well beyond the shot.

One of the most meaningful sights was the meat being loaded for delivery to the communities surrounding the hunting blocks. Seeing that quantity of food puts the animal’s value into perspective. It deserves respect, and seeing the meat put to use mattered to all of us.

I’m grateful to everyone who made this Botswana hunting safari possible: the trackers who read the ground, the camp team who looked after us, and the friends who shared the heat, hard miles and excitement. So much happens behind the scenes, and none of it goes unnoticed.

We leave with stories we’ll tell for years, lessons learned on foot and a deeper appreciation for these animals and the wild country they call home.

Thank you, Botswana. What a privilege to spend time under your skies.

Nzou — Elephant

While I take immense pride in guiding my clients on any species, elephant and buffalo hunting hold a special place in my heart. There is something about following these animals on foot that demands your complete attention. You become conscious of the wind against your face, the ground beneath your boots and every sound coming from the bush ahead.

At close quarters with an elephant bull, you feel just how small you are.

On this hunt, a close friend took a superb old bull carrying 68 and 63 pounds of ivory. Sharing an encounter like this with someone you know well makes it all the more meaningful. It is a memory we will carry long after the tracks have disappeared.

His final set of molars told another part of his story: this was an old bull, an animal that had lived through decades of changing seasons. Standing beside him, the excitement gives way to something quieter. There is admiration, gratitude and the weight of responsibility that comes with taking an animal of this stature.

The ivory is remarkable, but it will never tell the whole story.

Elephant hunting has its place in conservation. When properly regulated and responsibly managed, it can help fund wildlife protection, maintain habitat and provide tangible benefits to the communities who share their land with dangerous game. That conservation value carries an obligation: careful selection, sound management, respect for the animal and accountability for what hunting contributes on the ground.

For me, the privilege of guiding these hunts comes with a responsibility that lasts well beyond the safari. I want my children to grow up knowing an Africa where elephants still roam, where their tracks cross the sand and where their presence commands the same awe it does today.

An exceptional old bull. A close friend. A moment that will stay with us for the rest of our lives.
