Farewell and thank you to Dane Garvey

After ten years of dedication and service to KZNTR, Dane will be moving on from the organisation.

Most of you will know Dane well. He has been one of those very special KZNTR faces behind the scenes, on the trails, at the timing table, sorting logistics, solving problems, answering questions, taking photos and quietly helping to keep race days moving.

Over the past decade, Dane has given a huge amount to KZNTR and to the wider trail running community. He has been a vital part of the team and is much loved by runners, colleagues and event partners.

Dane is a capable person with a broad skill set. He has a science degree, strong self-taught IT skills, practical event experience, and the kind of problem-solving ability that comes from years of working under pressure in a small team.

As with many long working relationships, there comes a point where people need to look at where they are going next. Dane has ambition and is ready to grow in a direction that is different from where KZNTR is currently heading. While that is not easy after ten years, it is an honest and natural point of change.

Dane’s departure is a real loss for KZNTR, and he will be missed. At the same time, we understand and respect that he is looking for the right next opportunity, where he can grow his technical abilities, practical experience and steady knowledge of events, systems and people.

This weekend’s Hilton College Trail Run will be Dane’s last event with KZNTR. Dane has never been one for the limelight, but it is a good chance for those who know him to say farewell, thank him, and wish him well.

KZNTR will continue to move forward, thankful for the role Dane has played in our story, and focused on the work ahead.

We wish Dane all the very best for his next chapter. Any organisation looking for someone practical, capable, loyal and willing to learn would be fortunate to have him on their team.

The 𝗛𝗶𝗹𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹 is not your everyday trail playground.

Set inside the Hilton College Private Nature Reserve, this run gives you rare access to a wild piece of the Midlands that is normally closed to the public. Big views, open grasslands, bushveld, valley drops, proper climbs and the winding uMngeni River far below, this is a route with real flow, proper grit and a whole lot of space to lean into.

The Long and Medium courses head deep into the 650-hectare reserve, dropping into the uMngeni Valley before working their way back up onto the plateau. Expect aloe-studded climbs, wide-open views over Otto’s Bluff and Albert Falls, flowing trail, dirt road sections and plenty of that special Midlands energy underfoot.

Keep your eyes open too. Warthog, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and antelope all call this reserve home, and out here, wildlife always has right of way and is a privilege to move amongst it.

The Short course keeps things a little more chilled, winding through shaded pine plantations for a cooler, steadier run with a strong sense of place.

Across all distances, Hilton College brings the good stuff: space, views, wildlife, runnable trail and enough bite to keep you honest. Smooth where it flows, punchy where it climbs, and fully worth showing up for.

Online entries close Friday, 5 June at midnight.

Exciting new challenges are coming to Umdoni 100

After an incredible course recce through the forests, gorges, beaches, and technical singletrack of Umdoni, we’re excited to officially introduce TWO new distance options for race weekend:

Trail 27 Challenge
Two laps of the iconic Umdoni loop. More climbing, more forest, more adventure — the perfect next step for runners wanting to go beyond traditional trail distances.

Ultra 52 Challenge
Four laps of the Umdoni loop and the ideal bridge between marathon racing and ultra-running. A true endurance test on one of the most unique coastal trail routes around.

Umdoni is tough, technical, scenic, and unforgettable — and these new distances are only the beginning.

PACER UPDATE
Pacers may join runners:
• After lap 3 for the 50 miler
• After lap 6 for the 100 miler

Pacers must complete at least one full section between aid stations before swapping.

Pacer registration is now officially OPEN.
All pacers must complete the registration form and indicate which runner they’ll be supporting.

We’re excited to welcome even more runners, pacers, and supporters to experience what makes Umdoni so special.

Last week we headed out for a recce at Umdoni Park Golf Club — and what a day of perfect weather and incredible trails.

We explored the Umdoni loop, uncovered some hidden gems and soaked in those breathtaking coastal views that make this area so special.

This Wednesday’s Trail News is a big one for Umdoni 100 — we’ve got something exciting coming.

If you’re looking for something beyond our traditional race offerings, but not quite ready for the 50 and 100 miler distances, this is one you’ll want to keep an eye out for.

More coming this Wednesday.
