Our wonderful veterinary team from Mandarin Equine were back at the farm today to ultrasound Stryder’s shoulder. Unfortunately, the top part of the mass is so large and so deep, the ultrasound couldn’t even pe*****te the entire thing. The lower bump appears to be a typical melanoma, so the thinking is this also could be a melanoma, but they can’t confirm 100% and can’t biopsy it due to the depth. What we do know is that it’s affecting the muscle in his shoulder and that there isn’t much we can do for it, as surgery at his age isn’t ultimately in his best interest. Instead, Stryder will be retiring from our program, and eventually moving closer to his mom, Amanda, so that she can more closely monitor and make the best decisions for him moving forward with her eyes on him every day. As soon as we have further details, we will plan a retirement party to celebrate his incredible contribution to our program over the last 3 years. We know this will be a heartbreaking blow to some of our students, as well as our volunteers and Ms Zoey and myself. We want to keep the vibe surrounding him incredibly positive and focus on celebrating the time we have had and still have together. Thank you for all your love and prayers as we navigate this time the best we can ❤️

Pippa joined our herd in January of 2024 as a care lease from a friend of Ms Zoey’s, Ms Ester. We have been blessed to partner with Pippa for many lessons over the last 2 1/2 years, and she’s taught many of our students very valuable lessons that they will carry forward with them forever. She has been a loved and cherished member of our team, but over the last year we’ve noticed some changes in her behavior which have led us to believe she’s not as happy in her role as she once was. We have done our very best, along with our team of veterinarians, body worker, chiropractor, acupuncturist, and trainers to find a solution that best fits her situation. At this time, we feel a change in living situation is in Pippa’s best interest, and we’ve made the very difficult decision (for us!) to return her to Ms Ester’s care. We are truly grateful that we were have shared so many wonderful memories with her, and wanted to offer our riders and volunteers the opportunity to share their favorite moments and pictures here as well as say goodbye before she leaves on Friday.

Danielle has been a friend of mine for many years- her daughter rode with me for a few years before the Navy sent them to Virginia. Last year, retirement finally brought them back, and it’s been fun to connect not only her daughter with the horses again, but Danielle as well!

Today, she is at a conference furthering her career as an educator, but sent me this sweet poem with this note: “We were encouraged to write a poem that resonates with us. I wrote one about the horses healing me in my troubled times.”

It’s such a great reminder of why we love our horses so very much. They do such an important job, and they are so good at it, even when people aren’t expecting it. 💞 What we do here matters. Your support matters. Our horses matter. You’ll never be able to convince me otherwise!

Sunday Spotlight: Big Mac 😍 Big Mac has been a staple at our farm for many years now, joining us in 2022 and owned by Olivia Davis. Olivia has been so generous to share him with our lesson students for many years, and he’s definitely become a favorite of many! You can spot Big Mac helping out students at their first shows- taking them over ground poles and crossrails and sometimes doing some dressage too! As an instructor, I love that Big Mac makes his riders think and ride correctly and pushes them to be better while still being safe and forgiving. In the barn, Big Mac is picky about his snacks- his favorites are carrots and he finds green apples offensive 😆❤️

If you have a favorite Big Mac photo, story, or video, share it in the comments below! ⬇️

Our bonfire plans for this evening are still ON! I’m not sure we can light our wood after all the rain yesterday, so if anyone has a smaller fire pit and dry wood, you’re welcome to bring that- but we’ve got the grill as back up even if you don’t! Hot dogs, buns, ketchup, mustard, plates & napkins, water and s’mores ingredients are on the house- feel free to bring other items to share! See you at 7!

You may have heard that one of our truly beloved partners, Stryder, hasn’t been feeling his best. We aren’t entirely sure what’s going on at this point- just that it’s something. In the last few months, we’ve had the vet out various times to check on new behaviors and new bumps. We’ve done bloodwork, physical exams, neurological exams, and we’re still waiting on some of the bloodwork to come back, but really they haven’t found any definitive cause. Next week, he has an ultrasound scheduled on a growing lump on his shoulder, and another follow up with the vet. For now, he’s out of the lesson rotation and being pampered (and snuck some treats- I see you friends! 👀) instead. His owner, Amanda, who has so graciously been willing to share him with our program for the past few years, is in the loop and helping to make the best choices for him as we move forward. If you are willing to donate towards the medical costs he’s accumulated so far or as we move forward, Amanda and I would both be grateful! You can donate via venmo PayPal to [email protected] or send us a DM with your email and the amount for a pledge from quickbooks that you can pay with a few easy clicks. We are so grateful for your support and prayers for this incredible guy and your understanding as we make changes to our lesson schedule and horse assignments.

Guess what arrived today- a day early?! Our first 10 loads of dirt to start filling in Lake Paramount 🥳 It’s probably going to be slow going to get it spread, but slow and steady wins the race! I can’t wait until we can fence all this and see the horses running out here instead of the ducks 😅💞 Thank you so much to the generous donors who helped make this dirt delivery possible and to Triple B Dirt who has long been our go to for sand, dirt, hard pan, and millings!

🥹 As the school year draws to a close and these girls creep closer and closer to wrapping up their high school careers (don’t worry, they aren’t done yet!), I can’t help but feel all the feels watching them jump around and ride so confidently. Yes, I am so proud of how much they’ve progressed in their riding, but I’m also proud of their perseverance, their horsemanship, and the incredible grown up humans they are becoming. I hope that no matter where life takes them, they always look back at their time in our barn and smile, and that they always feel loved and at home when they pull down our drive. But also, if time could stop moving so fast, I’d be ok with that too 😅❤️

Thanks for taking these riders, and so many others, to the next level!
