As everybody shifts gears and reorganize teams, I find it prudent to remind everybody * coaches AND parents * Best Practices for team 💲money management.💲
Best Practices for any nonprofit / youth sports team, etc., etc., is that your treasurer is not related to the coach. Bank statements go to yet an additional third-party parent. While the coach and the treasurer will establish a detailed budget, every single parent can offer input and approval, or suggest adjustments for discussion.
The treasurer should prepare a monthly financial report that is supported by the most recent bank statement, and provided to all of the parents.
Books are never closed. Parents put money into that account, kids do fundraisers to contribute to that account, it is the treasurers responsibility to report how that money is being used.
If your coach and/or treasurer does not agree with Best Practice, that’s a huge🚩🚩red flag! 🚩🚩
Unfortunately, every year we hear of an unscrupulous treasurer, and this year is no different. My daughter‘s team, many years ago, also faced a similar situation. The team was out several thousand dollars that the parents had to make up.
Open books and open communication will contribute to a successful, cohesive season.
