The NCAA Tournament really helps support the fact that shooting is the most important skill in basketball. Check out the K-State vs Kentucky shot chart. Both teams fired a lot of blanks from the perimeter. Do you think a few more made shots from the perimeter might have helped either team win?

The teams that lost to the lower seed in the first round shot a combined 35/156 from 3 - which is 22.4%!

THOUGHTS ON THE BASKETBALL SEASON - 3.15.23

I watched a lot of basketball this season-- everything from high school basketball to JC to NCAA D1. While many factors contribute to winning, no factor is greater than shooting a higher percentage than your opponent. Very rarely does a team shoot the ball well and lose. If this is true, are your coaches/trainers, prioritizing high volume shooting reps at every practice and workout?

Now let's look from the perspective of a player. Two thoughts:

1-How many REALLY capable shooters are stuck on the bench? Not many. The way the game has evolved, spacing the floor with shooters at every position is critical!

2-How many players just finished their season and feel like they DON'T need to improve as a shooter? I think we all know the answer to that question.

LEARNING IN THE LAB - 6.13.22

The most rewarding aspect of working with shooters in the lab is figuring out what they need to adjust to make shots at a higher percentage. Last night, I had a really good shooter going through her second session. Her average trajectory is right where it needs to be and her left-right accuracy is remarkable. The only inconsistent aspect was her depth-- with most of her misses coming up short. On a set of 50 3s, I decided to record the number of attempts landing between 8" and 13" beyond the front of the rim. Of those, I also wanted to see how many of those attempts would result in made shots.

The result: of the 50 attempts, 25 landed between 8-13" beyond the front of the rim....and of those 25 attempts, 23 were makes!

Conclusion: if this shooter really focuses on improving her average depth, she will go from being a good shooter to an elite shooter!

2-minute shooting separates elite shooters from pretenders! Start out by making 3 three-point shots at each of 5 spots around the perimeter in 2-minutes. If you survive, go to 4, then 5. To get to 6, you'll need multiple rebounders/passers and you'll need to make nearly every shot!

Check out this competitive shooting drill with 2 shooters called 7-in-the-pot. You can do it from anywhere on the floor and keep track of wins between the 2 shooters to see who prevails in a 5-game or 7-game series!

Check out one of my favorite competitive shooting drills - the Bird Drill. Make 2 in a row at each of 5 spots, then go back around the horn for a total of 20 makes!
