With freshman daughter leading the way, Clearview coach Britney Ewan captures win No. 300

Britney Ewan never likes the credit.
After all, you don’t build a successful program by yourself.
But on this hot Thursday evening, Ewan had the chance to reflect on her past two decades of accomplishments as the head field hockey coach at Clearview after reaching a significant milestone.
Now one game into her 21st season, Ewan reached her 300th career win with a 6-0 shutout of Egg Harbor Township in non-league action. Ewan is the winningest active coach in South Jersey and 15th winningest in our region’s history.
“It means a lot. I always say I give credit to the girls and to the players who have come through this program since all the way back in 2006 when this first started,” Ewan said. “I kept stressing to the girls that it can’t be done without them, and I made sure they knew that today. They are the most important part of the program and everything else that comes with it is just a bonus.”
Fittingly, Ewan’s freshman daughter, Rilyn Rabbai, led the team with three goals in her debut. She was one of the most highly regarded middle school players over the last few years and now gets to showcase her talent at the high school level alongside her mom.
“It means a lot to me because I know she has been working really hard to get to this. It also means a lot that I scored on her 300th win to get her here,” Rabbai said. “That was my goal last year and this year, and it’s my goal to get her fourth in a row this year.”
According to Ewan, being able to finally coach her daughter is a bittersweet experience.
“It’s been a long time coming,” Ewan said. “She’s been on the sidelines with me since she was born, so she’s been able to watch all the transitions take place in this program for the last 14 years that she’s been alive. It’s definitely bittersweet to now have her here and a part of it, and being able to experience the camaraderie and the family orientation that this team has and contributes to each other.”
A 2000 Millville graduate, Ewan built Clearview’s program from the ground up since her arrival in 2006. The Pioneers had never won a sectional or state title before her tenure started. 20 years later, and the program has grown into a state power. Clearview now has four Group 3 state titles, including a concurrent streak of three, and six sectional crowns.
“Coach Ewan is one in a million,” said senior Celeste Conklin, a Mullica Hill resident who played at Paul VI before transferring back to Clearview before her junior year. “I honestly really couldn’t describe her to anyone else because of just truly how special she is. I think this is a great thing for our program and her, and it’s truly something that should be recognized. Each and every single one of her players is truly grateful to play for her.
“Coach Ewan was truly the main reason I came back here. She gave me everything that a team needs and wants. She was honestly the main reason and I don’t think I would’ve come back without her.”
Ewan’s longevity in the South Jersey field hockey scene is impressive as well. Her overall career record now stands at 300-87-23. Clearview Athletic Director Steve Asay graduated high school the year before Ewan took the helm of the program.
And that’s saying something.
“It’s an incredible run by her,” Asay applauded. “I’m so impressed that year after year we’re able to continue to produce really good teams. So much credit and I’m fortunate to work with her and looking forward to many more years with her.”
The question on everyone’s mind, though?
Will she stick around for No. 400 and beyond?
At her current pace, another 100 wins would take a year after Rilyn graduates in 2030, but according to her, there should be little doubt.
“I think she will,” Rilyn, 14, said. “She loves the game so much. I know she wants to come see me play in college, but I think she’s going to stay here for a very long time.”
