Last week I was overjoyed to welcome a visit from Hypercat athlete Brendan Jackson when work brought him to SoCal. He is private pilot who is working hard on preparations for an opportunity with a commercial airline.

I have been coaching Brendan and his dad, Sean who are based in Tennessee. They have been training all year with their collective sights set on Ironman Florida.

Race day is ~9 days away. I'll be flying out (as a passenger, lol) to offer coach support and cheer them to the finish.

If you'll be at Ironman Florida, comment "IMFL." I'll look up your bib number. I'll be cheering and taking pictures! See you in Panama City!

Every marathon finisher has a unique story.

A common thread in that story is the shared appreciation of what it takes to get it done..
and what it means to "PR", come back from injury and overcome adversity.

Congratulations to each and every athlete who crossed the TCS Waterfront Marathon.

And a special congrats to our very own Hypercat, Karen Armstrong! 😍

Here are 3 quick pre-race tips whether you're running 13.1 or 26.2:

1. Know your fueling strategy. Set a watch alert, create a paper bracelet, or write the info on your hand. Late in a race your brain gets foggy and it's easy to miss a gel or your fuel. Decide ahead of time exactly when you'll fuell (every 30 to 40 minutes works for many athletes) and let your watch do the remembering.

2. Prioritize sleep two nights before race day not just the night before. Pre-race nerves often cost us sleep on the final night and that's okay. The sleep you get two nights out is what carries you through.

3. Run the first 5K a touch slower than feels natural. With a taper, a crowd, and adrenaline, your early miles will feel almost too easy. We'll call that the sign that you're doing it right. Save the energy for the second half, where the PRs are set .

It was not a mammogram.

It was a self-check.

I discovered a tiny hard spot in my right breast while taking a shower.

I wouldn't likely have had a routine mammogram for many more months.

That discovery was the beginning of my recovery.

Men and women get breast cancer.

Please check yourself today.
Don't know how? Watch a tutorial on your phone.

Don't wait. Do it today.

Comment "self check" to commit to yourself. I'll keep you accountable, too.😍

5th in the World!

Congratulations to Valerie Ritchie on an outstanding finish at the Sprint Triathlon World Championships in Pontevedra, Spain, where she placed 5th in the F70-74 while representing Team USA.

Valerie and I set out to build her strategy around riding the hills as strong as possible, with higher cadence work as the foundation.

Watching Valerie take to the world stage was a privilege. Seeing that hard work pay off is awesome!

Congratulations, Valerie! 👏

Friends + racing = memories ❤️

Last week Brennen Hatfield ran the Mammoth Trail Fest 10K with a crew of friends. They took on the whole course together, tutus, trekking poles, and big smiles all the way.

When Brennen and I talked about this race he said he hung back wirh friends, had fun and made it a "Zone 1 Race." I love this. A "Zone 1 Race" means fun with friends, an easy effort or supporting/encouraging those in your group, lots of laughs and the finish line as a shared goal.

I dont think we shpuld push ourselves to the limits at every race. Having a fun event like this keeps us connected to why we started in endurance sports in the first place. It helps nurture our love of sport and it carries us through those harder training days and those races where we are out there to do our absolute best.

Congratulations Brennan and to the whole crew on a fantastic day on the trails!

What's your favorite race to do with friends? 👇
