🧘♀️ YOUR BALANCE ISN'T JUST ABOUT YOUR FEET! 🦶
Ever notice that some days you can stand on one leg without a problem, and other days you're wobbling before you even lift your foot? There's actually some pretty interesting science behind that!
Your balance relies on three systems working together:
👀 Your vision — helping your brain understand where you are in space.
👂 Your inner ear — detecting movement and changes in head position.
💪 Your muscles and joints — sending information to your brain about where your body is, even when you're not looking.
But here's something we don't talk about enough: Your balance can change from one day to the next! And what you did YESTERDAY can absolutely affect how steady you feel TODAY.
Did you spend yesterday on your feet? Go for a long hike? Work out harder than usual? Your muscles might be fatigued, and that can affect your stability.
Didn't sleep well? Your brain may have a harder time processing all that information your body uses to stay balanced.
Feeling stressed? Dehydrated? Recovering from a busy weekend? Those things can play a role, too.
Your balance isn't a fixed ability. It's a constantly changing conversation between your brain and your body. And here's the really cool part: Balance is a skill you can practice and improve! That's one reason we incorporate balance work into yoga, whether you're standing on your mat or working from a chair. We're not practicing balance just to hold a pretty tree pose. We're practicing it for stepping off curbs, navigating uneven ground, getting dressed, and staying confident as we age.
So the next time you're wobbling in a pose you nailed last week, don't get frustrated. Get curious. Maybe your body is simply responding to everything you've asked it to do over the last 24 hours.
Yoga isn't just about what you can do on your mat. It's about what your practice helps you do everywhere else. ❤️
And remember, some days the strongest thing you can do is put your foot down, reset, and try again.
