This weekend I had the opportunity to attend the Massad Ayoob Group MAG-20 course in Slidell, LA, and it was a great experience!
This was probably my 6th or 7th training course of the year, but only my 3rd that wasn't instructor-level training, and my first non-instructor-level shooting course. Even though I teach an average of 3–4 days a week (sometimes 5–6 classes in a week), I still consider myself a student, and I always will.
I'm constantly looking for new challenges and ways to improve, both as a shooter and as an instructor. Those of you who have trained with me more than once know that the training I offer gets a little different and more polished every year. That doesn't happen by accident. It's the result of a lot of studying, practicing, training, and putting in the work behind the scenes.
One of the things I really enjoyed about this weekend was getting to put the instructor hat down for a couple of days and just be a student again. I picked up several things that worked well for me, especially as I'm getting older. Things change! Techniques that worked great when I was younger can become more challenging when you've got five tears between your shoulders and your eye dominance starts switching to your off eye. 😂
Now comes the hard part: putting in the work over the next few months to make these new concepts second nature. That's what training is all about. You never stop learning, adapting, and finding ways to get better.
I'm looking forward to training with these gentlemen again, and I'm already watching for the schedule for the MAG-30 course dates. When they announce it, I'll be signing up that day!
For anyone interested in taking the MAG-20, it's a two-day, 500-round stress-fire course. If we can get enough people together, they'll host a class specifically for our group. I'd be more than happy to take it again, so reach out if you're interested!
Never get so comfortable teaching that you forget what it's like to be a student. There's always something to learn and always room to improve.
Keep training! 💪🎯
