Nyad said this standing on the beach in Key West, having just swum from Cuba at sixty-four on her fifth attempt. It was one of three things she wanted people to take from it, alongside never giving up and never being too old to start.
The team line is the one people skip, and it is the truest of the three. She had a navigator reading currents, a handler feeding her in the dark, a doctor watching for jellyfish stings, a boat crew awake for fifty-three hours. She did the swimming. She did not do it alone.
Same in a lesson. The swimmer does the work, and nobody does it by themselves. There is an instructor reading what the body is doing, a parent in the water or on the deck, and a plan built across weeks rather than invented that morning.
It looks like one person in the water. It never is.
