Mighty Ducks Defeat Blizzards 15-12 In High-Scoring Game 8/23/26

Games in the gold division typically rack up high goal count, and this one was no exception. Unconventional for the GTIHL, this game was played entirely 3-on-3 since both benches were short. Because of that the action started out fast paced, with the teams exchanging rushes and shots. After a few minutes of this, Grant Meyer would open the scoring for Mighty Ducks, beating Blizzards goaltender AJ Glover with a slapshot. Shortly afterwards, Matt Zoepke would make it 2-0 after he beat Glover through the legs on an assist from Meyer. The game looked like it would get out of hand early after the Mighty Ducks had a chance on a breakaway, but Glover was sharp and stopped the shot. Eventually, Jude Hunt would get the Blizzards on the score sheet, firing a shot past substitute goalie Reaghan Pietrowski that beat her glove. The goal was assisted by Charles Nolette. As the Blizzards were looking to tie it up, a bad turnover led to another scoring chance, which was saved but eventually a rebound was put away by Matt Vild. Glover made an excellent save on Meyer, but an unfortunate bounce led to the ball being on Vild’s stick and a completely open side of the net to shoot at. More back and forth hockey at that point but the Mighty Ducks had a couple more breakaway chances, but the shots just went wide. Hunt would score again on an assist from Nolette, as the latter swung behind the net and connected on a nice pass to the former in the high slot, then Hunt beat Pietrowski to keep the score close. After a few good saves by Pietrowski, and another by Glover, Vild would score another from Zoepke that beat Glover high on his glove side. A few more saves by both goaltenders would end the period.

From here on, the floodgates on the goals were opened. Just out of the first minute, Sean Smith would score for the Mighty Ducks on an assist from Zoepke. This was answered by Hunt again with an assist from Nolette and Steve Dibble. Blizzards almost scored again right after, but Pietrowski had a nice glove save to deny Nolette. Hunt scored two more goals in a short time, one of which rebounded up and he batted out of the air. Zoepke and Meyer of the Mighty Ducks answered though, scoring once each. The scoring stalled briefly as both goalies were making a couple of saves before both teams found the back of the net again. First Nolette, then Meyer, followed by Hunt, and finally Lars Culver scored his first (and only) of the game, keeping it a two-goal game as the period ended. For those not counting, the score after two periods was 9-7. The Blizzards were putting in effort to get the game tied up but everything they scored, the Mighty Ducks answered, a trend that would continue in the third period.

To start the third, both teams would exchange two goals each, as Meyer and Vild would score for the Mighty Ducks and Hunt and Nolette would score for Blizzards. Hunt would score again later in the period to bring the score within one, but it was answered by Vild again. With the action rolling back and forth, both goalies were playing well, each making a handful of saves before Nolette would score on a pass from Hunt. To counter this, Vild would score on a break away. Smith sent a lob pass to center ice to Vild, who snuck behind the defense and beat Glover. Hunt scored another goal with two minutes left, bringing the score to 13-12, setting up the game for a dramatic finish. However, as the Blizzards were pushing for a tying goal, Zoepke would score with under a minute left to regain a two goal lead. Blizzards called a timeout to try to get a plan together but Smith scored in the last few seconds of the game to get us to the final score of 15-12.

Matt Zoepke led the Mighty Ducks in scoring with nine points, scoring four goals and assisting five, while Jude Hunt led the Blizzards with eight goals and four assists for 12 points. Reaghan Pietrowski stopped 10 out of 22 shots in the win as she helped the Mighty Ducks improve to 3-2, while AJ Glover made 10 saves on 25 shots as the Blizzards became 2-4 after the loss.

Special Teams, Breakaways Drive Roller Bears Rout of Tuna 7-2

On Sunday, the Roller Bears entered a contest against the defending novice division champions, Tuna, looking to prove that they are ready to contend for that same championship. Tuna was coming into the game hoping to change their recent results, having lost their first two games of the season.

The game began with a sense that both teams were trying to feel each other out, with neither team taking a big risk to enter the offensive zone, keeping the action directly in the neutral area. The Roller Bears eventually broke in and it paid off as Zachary Ludwig got the ball off a pass from Drew Russell and then dangled his way around the defense of Tuna and the goaltender, Jason Robertson, before putting it home for an early 1-0 lead. Tuna would look for a quick response as they would have good zone possession and generate a few shots on net, but couldn’t get anything past Mike Miller. Brett Miller II would eventually poke check the ball up to Braylin Gomez for a 2-on-1 rush but Robertson was sharp and was able to make the save on the shot attempt. Shortly after that, Tuna would end up finding the back of the net as Rob Retzlaff’s shot went between the legs of Miller to tie the game late into the first period. After some more back and forth, Mike Dickrede committed a tripping penalty behind his net with 2:24 remaining the period, and then had an additional unsportsmanlike conduct penalty called against him to make his penalty a double minor. After some good power play cycling by Tuna which generated a couple scoring chances, Ludwig had a great pokecheck at the blue line and was off on a breakaway chance that he wouldn’t miss on, faking out Roberson with a forehand//backhand move before putting it away for his second goal. The Roller Bears would score another short handed goal right after as Brett Miller II took the open ice that was given to him, dangling around most of Tuna before passing it in slot to find Ludwig who ripped it and scored, getting a natural hat trick in the process.

The second period started off the same as the first, as neither team was having success breaking into the zone. The sharp penalty kill of the Roller Bears killed off the remaining time from Dickrede’s double minor penalty but they also couldn’t break through once they were back to even strength as Tuna was also getting excellent defensive play at their blue line. Tuna would eventually break into the offensive zone and maintain good possession for most of the period. They would generate a lot of shots, as Retzlaff, Austin Zdybek, Matt Culling, and Jay Ackerman were all getting good looks at the net but Miller was on his game and was turning everything away. On the other end, Robertson was just as sharp this period, stopping a good opportunity from Ludwig as he was looking for his fourth of the contest. The second period came to a close as Retzlaff had one more shot on net but it was turned away by Miller keeping the score 3-1 for the Roller Bears.

While the last two periods started out slow, the third was fast paced. Tuna was looking to swing momentum their way early and was starting to pull a defenseman to join the rush while entering the offensive zone. It was working, but Miller was as sharp as he was in the second, stopping an initial shot and then multiple rebounds before finally getting a stoppage. Tuna kept on the attack, being aggressive on the forecheck and maintaining possession before calling a timeout to figure out a gameplan. It paid off as Retzlaff would move past the defense and score, beating Miller high glove side to cut the lead to one. Just when it seemed like Tuna had everything going their way, Roller Bears’ Braylin Gomez had a chance on a break away and scored with a backhand shot before falling with style, regaining the two goal lead. Robertson would get back in the groove, stopping back to back shots, one of which he trapped between his pad and his foot. As the game was winding down, Ludwig would get another chance on a breakaway and would put it home to score his fourth goal of the game, and give the Roller Bears a commanding lead. Right after, Chad Ackerman would get his own breakaway but Miller stood tall and made not only the initial save but also a save on the rebound. Mike Dickrede would end up scoring the final goal from a pass from Brett Miller, putting it through the legs of Robertson to get to the final score of 7-2.

Zachary Ludwig led the Roller Bears in scoring, having four goals, while Rob Retzlaff led Tuna in points with two goals of his own. Mike Miller saved 24 out of 26 shots in the victory while Jason Robertson allowed seven goals on 28 shots in the loss. The Roller Bears will look to keep momentum rolling next week against the Toledo Benders. Tuna would end up falling to Stingers 9-4 later in the day but will look to get a rematch against them next Saturday as they look to right the ship.

Village Pubbers Get First Win In Defensive Battle Over Toledo Warriors 8/1/26

The Village Pubbers defeated the Toledo Warriors 3-1 to get their first win of their first ever season. Both teams entered the game 0-2 on the season and were looking to gain some momentum in the bronze division, and they both played like they had something to prove. Out of the gate, it was a back and forth affair as they were exchanging good scoring chances, but Warriors goalie Steve Pasztor and Village Pubbers goalie Caleb Opblinger stood tall and didn’t allow anything early. Nathan Vidra in particular had a great first period. Playing defense for Village Pubbers, it was as if he was shot out of a cannon, playing with speed and skill at both ends of the ice, helping his team generate good offensive chances and preventing chances on the back end. Warriors AJ Glover and James Christian had multiple shots on net in the first period, but couldn’t put one past Opblinger. Christian in particular forced a takeaway at center ice and had a breakaway but shot just wide of the net. Soon after, with 10 seconds left to go in the first, Andrew Klepek would score his first goal of the season, putting one past Pasztor’s low blocker side with an assist from Malachi McLean. Before the period was over, Vidra had one last scoring chance on a breakaway but that was stopped by Pasztor to keep the score 1-0 after one.

The second period was played with more control, especially from the Village Pubbers. The defensive group of Vidra, McLean, Lukas De Selms, and Derek Opblinger were all crucial in shutting down the Warriors’ offense in this period, pushing attackers to the outside and causing takeaways along the boards. There was some chaos in their end though as at one point Lukas Posey and AJ Glover had multiple scoring chances and rebound shots but they were all saved by Opblinger before he finally got a whistle and was able to stop the play. Shortly after, Derek Oplinger took a tripping penalty but that was killed off. The Village Pubbers then had excellent zone time before momentum shifted once more and Lukas Posey took one last shot before time expired on the period. His chance was denied by Opblinger.

Going into the third period holding onto a 1-0 still, Village Pubbers were looking for a little breathing room and got just that as Gavin Roberts took the opening faceoff, entered the zone and took a long shot that beat Pasztor high. Soon after, Nathan Vidra corralled a dumped in ball before tucking a pass right where it needed to be onto the stick of Roberts who then cut to the front of the net and buried his second of the game, giving them a 3-0 lead. Posey would get another chance at a breakaway afterwards, but Caleb Opblinger stopped the shot attempt on the short side. Opblinger would again rob Posey on a one timer from a pass from Kaleb White. White would eventually score on a shot that beat Opblinger through the legs to break the shutout and make the game 3-1 with a minute to play, but the defense and goaltending held firm as the timer hit zero and Village Pubbers claimed their first victory.

Gavin Roberts led Village Pubbers in scoring with two points (both goals), while Kaleb White had the lone goal for Toledo Warriors. Caleb Opblinger stopped 16 out of 17 shots in the victory while Steve Pasztor saved 21 out of 24 in the loss.
