You may have seen this post last summer, but we think it deserved another mention for our anniversary series! 👇

From the late 70s to mid 80s, our guides were literally belaying the rafts down the side of Ripogenous Gorge to get them to the Penobscot River. Guests would walk past this point to the milder 'goat path,' leading them down to their guides at water level. This would all take place across the river and just upstream from McKay Station, where our trips now start.

The person at the bottom, which we believe is George “Gunsmoke” Foster in this series, had to pull the raft away from the gorge walls as it was being lowered by the crew up top. Otherwise it would scrape all the way down the 100’ belay.

Nowadays, we carry the raft along the side of McKay station. What a walk in the park! 😆
