Back on this Black Max today. We tuned it up a few months back and it ran great, then he said it went to not running but about half throttle. We had more time to do a complete check on it today. Compression is good. Spark on all 6 cylinders.

Engine wouldn’t turn over for us until we jumped the solenoid. We tried using our remote and it still wouldn’t work. We have a good used solenoid we will swap it out.

Battery cables were loose. Never good on these Mercurys. This one has several things hooked up to the battery as well. We tightened the cables and jumped over the solenoid to test spark and compression.

Tested the stator and trigger for ohms. They tested good. Ran the motor and ran DVA test on the stator. No voltage drop to indicate a bad stator. Drained the carbs and flushed them again.

I have a surgical procedure on Monday so I will be back on this one on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.

1959 Johnson 18 hp with electric start. Notice that the engine runs great until the hood is back on and then it begins to choke out. This is most likely caused by a bad powerhead gasket allowing exhaust to come into the the hood/cowling and choking the engine. We will swap the powerhead gasket out next week.

Dons beautiful boat with a 1959 18 hp with electric start. Motor fired up, runs great, pees as it should, put it in gear and it runs smooth.

Put the cowling back on and put it in gear and about a minute later it starts coughing and choking out.

In many cases, that tells us it has a bad powerhead gasket and it’s getting exhaust under the cowling and choking it out. Next week we will replace the powerhead gasket on the engine. We will also remove the inline fuel filter, sometimes on these motors from this era they don’t always create enough pull for the fuel pump to keep up fighting the inline aftermarket filter. We will keep you posted.

Dan Brock came to see us today. He has a collection of gorgeous Antique Outboards dating back to 1915.

He has a 1915 knuckle buster Evinrude and several others. We hope to go look at the collection soon.

He also has a small showroom with antique tackle dating all the back into the 1800’s

We saw pictures of some fishing rods and reels that were immaculate!

He also has a 19 ft Glaspar that appears to be the 3rd one produced according to the title. Lots of goodies!

We will get pictures when we can.

1976 Johnson 70 hp. We replaced the impeller and gear oil this week. New spark plugs and carbs completely rebuilt.

We also had to replace the power pack and trigger. All back together and fired it up and it’s pumping water from either the exhaust cover, the power head or both. We will replace both, then it will be good to go.

I don’t see this often, but occasionally you get one that needs something extra. This is that one. 🦏💪

1976 70 hp Johnson. After doing a full tune up on it. Fired it up and water comes gushing out the side. 🥺 After further inspection we find that the exhaust cover on a leaking from underneath it. Hopefully everything will come apart easily and we will just have to replace the gaskets. We will be back on this one next week.

Rick jumped on this Force remote that wasn’t working this morning and found the problem quickly. The guy is a master on working on remotes. He found the problem and made short work of it. We test ran the motor, shifting works great now! Good Job Rick !

1995 Johnson 130 hp 4 cylinder 2 stroke lower unit. This one has seen better days. Lots of metal in the lower unit. We replaced this lower with a good used lower.
