I always tell new collectors to enjoy the sports cards as a hobby.
If you're buying the hot rookies, hoping to make bank, you're only going to be disappointed. If you're going to invest in high-dollar rookies, you are going to lose more than you win if you do your research on just straight investing in new hot rookies. Some folks think they have the secret sauce, and a small percentage actually do. Social influencers out there are pushing the hype for new players and new products, buying them low and moving them as the price peaks. There are so many factors you need to think of when it comes to buying sports cards, and these are only a few:

True rookies

Hard-signed auto vs. sticker

Licensed card vs non licensed

Set appeal (does it have a long history of good sales, like
Bowman Chrome)

New product is a guessing game, as you have no data. Will it become iconic or a discontinued like Bowman Inception

Again, enjoy the hobby for what it brings you, and if you earn dollars, cool, but not the main reason. Ignore all the social media folks wanting you to see sports cards as a tangible investment.
